Have any questions or tips and advice on how to build those bits that don't come ready made.

Airfix / GMR decal / signage removal

Postby lenht1951 » Wed Sep 27, 2017 5:21 pm

Hi, has anyone tried to remove the decal / signage from the Airfix / GMR range of wagons. I have tried brake fluid and cotton bud and although this was successful on the Hornby range it failed miserably on the Airfix and did not fade it at all. Any ideas at all on how to remove. Thanks.

Cannot recall trying to remove their lettering.

There are a variety of solutions that may work depending on how the lettering was applied.

Enamel thinners (defiantly works with Mainline and older Bachmann models)

Typists eraser (difficult to find these days)

T-cut

Toothpick with or without T-cut

Make sure first though that you have well washed the model - some brake fluids can react badly with the plastic body.

Been a long time since I did anything like that, but would a fiberglass pencil work? Are you repainting?

For the info of anyone attempting this. Well the thinners failed, and the brake fluid both failed to work on the Hornby, Mainline and the Airfix. I next tried the glass fibre pen which worked great on the Hornby brake van and the Mainline bogie milk vans without damage to the paint, unfortunately it took off the top layer of paint around the decals on the Airfix brake van, LMS wagon grey here I come.
