Either paint brick red and let dry for many days (or cover with matt varnish) then paint with very dilute mortar colour and wipe off with cloth (wrapped round edge of card to give flat surface) like shown here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYPp_P2V5xM
Or paint all in mortar and dry brush the red on surface.
I tend to do both, as the first gives uniform red, so I also drybrush alternate orange browns to get varying colours of brick

and green mildew/moss
and white mineral blossoms
and yellow stains
etc

Picture is actually Linka, but the technique works just as well or better with plasticard

Nice work, TS. I prefer the first method myself.
  1. Paint the bricks quite dark
  2. Use a very watered down wash of white artists' acrylic (from a tube) over the top.
  3. Dab away any excess drops with a paper towel.
  4. Remember that mortar would be hardly visible if you looked at a real building from far away and don't worry about it too much.
I was a little heavy handed on this one

Ray835, I produced a video showing my technique for painting and weathering embossed brickwork.

Hope it's of some help.
