New 1/32 Diorama but this time in slow motion
Re: New 1/32 Diorama but this time in slow motion
Where does the foilage come from? You may have said before. It looks great.

Hi Mountain!
The foliage was done by Mother Nature, stolen by Magoo and given the glycerin three weeks bath by me.
Because the glycerin treatment darkens a bit the natural colour I made the rotating mesh drum for my spray booth ( I think I posted about when I was new to this forum) and there I sprayed. airbrushed a bit of (acrylic) colours.
The plant is extensively used here as ground cover for the gardens but I've been told it was erradicated and banned in the UK because considered a plague.
The name is "Soleirolia soleirolii".
https://goedegroei.nl/kamerplanten/slaapkamergeluk/
It comes in three shades of green and the one in the photo is the middle one.
Every year I buy several plants, cut them as near of the ground as possible and give them the glycerine bath but keep giving water to the small pots and get one or two more productions after a while.

It might be the stuff that grows in ponds. If it is, we did have lots of it, but then we had ducks.
What is glycerin? I did look for some before to rubberize lichen as we have lots of lichen growing around here, but I did not know where to get it or how to use it.

No not banned, pretty prolific so there has been much advice about not encouraging it. Known in the UK as "baby's tears" or "Mind your own business". I remember it being sold in the 60's and older gardeners advising don't plant it.
Growing old, can't avoid it. Growing up, forget it!

Oh. I know the plant you mean. It grows in towns. Not sure it does that well in the countryside as it needs walls to grow on.

I have no idea what glycerin 'is' but I know it solves my foliage problems very well and know also it is added to plenty of the food we eat.Mountain wrote:It might be the stuff that grows in ponds. If it is, we did have lots of it, but then we had ducks.
What is glycerin? I did look for some before to rubberize lichen as we have lots of lichen growing around here, but I did not know where to get it or how to use it.
I had heard that in the nineties but a little 100ml bottle costed me what now would be around 10 euro and I was so terriefied by that that never used it.
Years later internet let me learn that I can get four (sometimes five) liters for 50 euro. That is still a lot of money for my budget but since I must mix it 1/3 glycerin with 2/3 warm water that means I will be able to prepare 15 liters which is enough for plenty.
Above that, after two to three weeks I remove the plants, filter the glycerin water with a mesh and simply re-use it one or two times more but then cold because I have read heating glycerine may be hazardous and adding more hot water would make ratio of the mix useless. I really don't notice any consequences when i re-use it cold.
Before I dried first the plants in the microwave (bought specially for it a huge second hand one for 10 euro and it works great but later I have learnt a different approach: nop drying but letting the bath two tpo three weeks instead than one or two days causes a different process: the plants are not dry but they get a kind of transfussion so the water they originally contain gets replaced by the glicerine mix. The r4esult is that instead of become brittle as with the first method, they keep their fully flexibility. In the case of the type of foliage I use for the Birches that flexibility is very important because reproduces perfectly the hanging of the real Birches foliage.
I did a fast search and found you can buy a 1liter bottle for same price in the UK but must be also many other:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Glycerol-Glyce ... B075XRJ5MW
As I wrote a couple of messages ago in this thread, if there is any interest we can start a dedicated thread on foliage.

That is good news for British modelers!
If I had a garden it would be 10sq meters groces and all the rest my 'foliage natural factory'!
I would use that plant certainly for any scale from H0 up.
What I forgot to mention is you can re-use the glycerine bath but no longer than two month.
That means at least three times 2,5 weeks.
Another thing I forgot to mention: after removing it from the bath I do wash it with plain water. Glycerin is not fat at all but leaves an seemingly fatty layer. That wouldn't cause any issue at, eventually, acrylic re-colouring but the weight of that thgin layer makes a bit difficult for the cheap Action spray glue I use to hold the heavier leaves in place. A fast washing simply droping the leaves in the water and inmediatelly set it to dry naturly at the windowsill or wherever.

Nex time, as someone asks me what plant I use for foliage I will answer: 'Mind you own business.'

I Brexit hadn't spoiled things so much I could send you a package of seeds but...Mountain wrote:Oh. I know the plant you mean. It grows in towns. Not sure it does that well in the countryside as it needs walls to grow on.
Anyway since it is here been used as a interior plant it must exist also in the UK such a (modified?) version.
Here they come in small size and I can get one for under 3 euro.
But instead of following what I've said I rather suggest you simply take a walk in your area ensuring you have a plastic bag and something to cut the plants.
There arein every city or town many varieties of weeds growing spontaneously between bricks, cracked cement, etc.

As you probably already know I try to follow the now instead of following plans. That causes often sudden, unexpected changes that I used to resist by sticking to my plans but now a days I listen to such impulses and let go whatever I may have decided before when making the 'plan'. ("...Yesterday don't matter, if it's gone...")
Years ago I made a big tree using only Sisal and PVA glue. It was tricky to learn but provided a beautiful, very maleablle tree so I thought I would make more... and forgot.
Long after that I found the Sisal tree while re-re-re-ordening my mostly chaotic shelves and started with a different approach:

Re: New 1/32 Diorama but this time in slow motion
First of today's trees.
I have three twisted wire armatures (on Balsa trunk) waiting for the foliage.
They are not really accurately done simply because I had no patience when I made them to give a second layer of the plaster/acrylic paint layer and bla-bla-bla... but, except for the often too noticeable wires they have the very best (wire) twigs for modeling this type of trees...

Re: New 1/32 Diorama but this time in slow motion
Well, I have completed 9 Paper Birches so far and although if I enjoy tree makery I neede a change to avoid it getting boring.
So I went to sleep with a clear plan: avoidingf every idea about what woul I do today.
I succeed at that so this morning, after brushing my teeth, a happy cloud swept me away and half an hour later, still in my pajamas, I was playing with my Greenkeeper ...
(Sorry for the ugly halogen lamp light but I needed to dry a lot of things and couldn't find my patience to wait for better situation. I will post better photos later today.)

Re: New 1/32 Diorama but this time in slow motion
Your scenes are amazing. Just a thought. Did you know that Smallbrook Studio do loco and rolling stock kits in 1/32 scale?

Thank you for your words.
Yes, I am aware of Smallbrook locos but none fits my scene.
I have been trying to build self at least one little Couillet-Decauville as these:

Have half built several buteven if my efforts were every time better, my eyes were the opposite way so it remain a sequence of frustration (I can deal with that. No problem) and several really perfect Rivarossi mechanisms and 3D printed parts waiting in boxes formy eyes surgery that now, due new rules at the health insurance seem to vanish.
Have got three specially (half) built for me in brass that where a dream, but as my eyes worsenned I was unable to do the rest of the work so gave them away.
Now I am letting the clock dance until I know if I am going to get the eyes surgery once the pandemic is gone or at least tempered or not because the insurance refuse to pay for it.
If it goes well I will build a ba=tch of those little stars in several versions for my 1/32 world.
If, instead, there comes no surgery, I will jump to 16mm scale and give Magoo a new world full of chances.
I did build the only diesel I really like. It is a Billard T-50 built from a cocktail of 3D printed, laser cut and hand made components of own design and runs on a modified Bachmann 0n30 "Closed Streetcar" mechanism that has been equiped with DelTang RC control and can run slow enough to get everybody nervous. I have also the almost ready ROWAN(ish) steam rail ar also equiped with DelTang RC and a Couillet-Decauville tender skeleton also equiped with DelTang. But, honestly, I only run them for about two minutes when John Vogelar -a Dutch friend who made the mechanisms adaptations and the RC installation- brought them home about four years ago. Since then all three have been waiting in their boxes.
Yes, a nbit of an heresy for a modeller but running trains is not my passion. Building them and all the rest is well.
This is the Billard T-50 in the later chopped "ROCHEFORT" layout:
