Plaster has been used quite effectively in the past on permanent layouts, especially when mixed with ground colour paints. Isn't that plaster of paris?

My roads and rockfaces are generic versions of Polyfilla mixed with black powder paint. If the plaster chips you don't then get a bright white patch.

Plaster gives a very realistic appearance and texture for rock faces and stonework when suitable coloured. I use water colours but it appears that acrylics work just as well.
