Ballasting how much do i need?

Postby bbdave » Tue Jun 21, 2011 10:09 pm

How much track does a bag of ballast do in n gauge roughly grams per meter? i've never done any ballasting so have no idea how much to buy.

Hello bbdave,

Bit of a question that one - it depends on lots of things, if the track is raised on cork to give a shoulder, or if it's flat on the board, whether you are ballasting a yard or mainline, how wide you want to go "off" the track etc. When I started ballasting I decided on the colour then bought a bag of ballast and got on with it. I knew I didn't have enough to finish the whole layout (and still haven't!), but its only only £3 per bag or so - and it does go a long way - so when you've almost finished you'll know how much one bag does, look at how much you've got left to ballast and judge from there.

The other thing is that ballasting is a long slow job, so you probably won't go through one bag immediately.

If I was you I would just have a go and see how you get on.

Hope this helps (apologies if it doesn't).

John P.
