I'm planning to pay a visit to my local model railway shop (I'm lucky to have it).

As I mentioned on another thread, on the steeper parts of the slope you should go for a more mixed grey to simulate rock rather than brown earth, earth does not naturally form steep slopes, hence the reason you get landslips, rock however can be found in near vertical faces.

You are absolutely right. I still have a lot to learn before I can build a hill that really looks like a hill. I also made several mistakes that I wouldn't do again.

Hi all and one !
What do you use for spreading flocks and scatters on your layouts ? Something like that or anything else ? Thanks for all your answers.

I just release from a small pinch between my thumb and forefinger.
It doesn't stand up in the way static applications do, but then looking
around here neither will all the natural grass !!
It's also a lot cheaper, but needs a specific gluing sequence and I use
several different colours & makes to get a more variable natural look.

The new hill fits exactly in the middle of my first circle of track. The green colour hides a lot of junk I left around the layout.

I'm also a thumb and forefinger sprinkler. I find that the glue I'm sprinkling on is critical - there needs to be plenty of it and I sometimes have to push the flock down after sprinkling to make sure it is properly fixed, or it just blows off later.

Hi GeraldH,

We obviously came from the same school of alternative thinking !!

As you say the glue application is part of getting the sprinkle method
to work successfully.
I only work on small areas at a time (difficult to be specific about that).
First I paint with neat quality PVA (Evo-stik Woodworker) then sprinkle on
a rubbery woodland scenics burnt grass ? This lets the glue soak into it to
give a good foundation. Then I use Jarvis Spring, Jarvis Summer, Noch
(Gaugemaster?) spring, Noch (Gaugemaster) summer, with some Jarvis
Autumn, Woodland Scenics Harvest, making a 'wet' patch the darker Noch
moorland, Oh and some summer meadow by Noch with colours in odd
places.
I then spray with water and drip on a weak thinned PVA from an eye dropper
It's only by experimenting that you get the right amounts of each and yes
some of the final scatter of Gaugemaster summer will blow off.
The finished grass can take loads of 'stick' as my 'Thomas' layout has proved.

Never lay grass this way if it's cold & damp, or you could find the PVA will
become stained with a white deposit from not drying out fast enough.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun to make my first try with these scatters. All your constructive criticism are welcome.
