Matt's workbench
Hi all,
I'm slowly building a layout (well I've built the baseboard) but have not laid any track yet so is that classed as a layout?! .
I'll start a topic on it soon. In the meantime I've been working on a variety of stock projects. My layout is a micro so running 10 coach express trains is never going to be an option - the maximum train length is limited to 2 - 3 wagons. As I'm a very on/off modeller, being able to focus on quick projects suits me!
My layout is set in the BR Blue era and will feature a terminus station but will also give me the option of running short freight trains (or that's the plan).
If it's alright, I thought I might share some of my completed and work in progress projects thus far.
BR ex LMS Stanier 20 ton brakevan
This is an old Dapol model simply detailed with new couplings, buffers, weight box and repainted to represent a CAO seen on Paul Bartlett's website. I'm currently trying to source suitable markings for this.
Lima CCT parcels van
I picked this up cheaply second hand. Mods include correct 14mm wheels, new w-irons, new couplings, replacement handrails and flush glazing. This needs repainting and weathering to complete. I've also just started work on a second.
Note that the roof isn't glued down in this photo!
Parkside SPV ex fish van
Another part of my small parcels fleet. Built, painted and weathered and just needs couplings to finish it off.
More soon hopefully and thanks for looking.

Re: Matt's workbench
Very nice, the weathering on that toad is particularly impressive!
Re: Matt's workbench
Very good. I think I'm at a similar stage though slightly advanced on where you are. I have track on my boards.
I like the stock you have. You have been very patient building or converting those. Very nice.

Thank you both very much for your comments
Some more projects:
16 ton mineral wagons
I really like 16 tonners. I've built several of the Parkside kits over the years. In an effort to save myself some £, I've combined Parkside chassis parts with Dapol unpainted bodies. Side by side with a Parkside kit, the slight difference in length is noticeable but at a cost of about £4 per wagon compared to £8 upwards for a full kit I'm not going to complain! Still to be painted and weathered.
Dapol 35 ton tanker
My current project is to build and detail two of these old kits. I've used various pieces of plastic rod to add some additional details to the underframe (representative only!) and have added (to one end only so far) new buffers from Wizard Models. Adding bearings meant I had to spread the solebars slightly but it's surprising free running for such an old kit once a bit of weight is added inside the tank.
Thanks for looking

This is why modelling short trains works for me - no way would I have the patience to detail a rake of 20+ wagons!Mountain wrote:Very good. I think I'm at a similar stage though slightly advanced on where you are. I have track on my boards.

That looks fantastic, you have done a really good job with itBR ex LMS Stanier 20 ton brakevan

Thank you so much for your kind comment!
Brakevan still needs a little more finishing off and a coat of matt varnish, once I've managed to source markings which is proving difficult.

Re: Matt's workbench
Progress has slowed now I'm back at work but I've found time to add the brake levers, which are a combination of kit and Parkside parts grafted together. I've also added some discs of plastic in strategic places - not prototypical but to hide rough spots!
You'll notice some as yet unsanded spots of filler on the tank too, again just to finish off some marks!

Re: Matt's workbench
That reminds me. I have many couplings and buffers to finish off on my waggons. Is a case of my mind saying "They're easy to make and fit" so I leave them to another day and then find I have so many to do that it will take aa solid day of two to complete the work. Its all fun!
I have to say though, that there's nothing like building you're own stock.

I quite agree, building your own stock is highly rewarding.Mountain wrote:That reminds me. I have many couplings and buffers to finish off on my waggons. Like you I have numerous finished items waiting for couplings - I'll get around to it one day!

Re: Matt's workbench
Cracking weathering there.
I'm always tempted to start another wagon as soon as I have one running.
Painting can be such a drag, you have to wait until dry and I can be quite
impatient !!

Thank you! I actually enjoy painting but, with a baby in the house, I can't do much at the moment. This is why most of my recent stock is still "au naturel"!!Dad-1 wrote:Cracking weathering there.

Re: Matt's workbench
Hi all,
Here's my completed (but as yet unpainted) Dapol 35 ton tanker wagon. I think the effort with some plastic rod, strip and sheet, plus the replacement buffers and ladders make all the difference!
I just need to get some replacement transfers now because the originals are yellowed.
Thanks

Hi all,
First post in ages. Two wagon projects I've been working on recently...
Thanks

Re: Matt's workbench
Some very nice work there. I particularly like the improvements to the Dapol tank and that 5 plank wagon is superb. I’m sure Geoff is watching those!

Matto21 makes me look lazy Tony.
I think I work on volume above substance. Look at all those beautiful white metal & brass components !!!
Cracking paint finishing as well, we see wagons that have had a life.
