Current Project: weathering all my stock

Not been able to do any layout stuff lately so I decided it was time to get on with weathering everything

Here’s my first attempt on a brake van

My aim was to make it look like it was coming toward the end of its life

You've certainly achieved that; the peeling paint effect looks very realistic, especially on the wooden body. I've always found wood effects harder to weather than metal, but by the looks of things you've got it down pat!

was actually a total accident tbh, was getting used to using the airbrush and put too much paint on, but I remembered in a tutorial I'd watched that it doesn't matter if you put on too much paint cause you can always strip it back and sometimes it looks better that way, this is one of those times, put on too much paint then scraped it off with a paint stirrer, then used some powders to blend it all back together

I don't know what to search for to find pictures of inuse break vans to compare to a prototype though, all the ones i was pulling up on google were pristine

This would perhaps be comparable? Though I do think yours looks better. Struggling with prototype or model photos does make things like weathering really difficult, it's why I've staved off the art for so long! The only things I've weathered so far are my Pullman cars' bogies and underframes, and some wagons which really need a bit more work.

Very nice. Is good experimenting. Sometimes results can come in the strangest ways. I've used rusty tin to represent rusty waggons... I've used my fingers on the fresh painted wood of other waggons knowing the effect it gives through accidently touching painted wooden rolling stock before the paint had dried... It is surprising!

Thanks everyone! I’ve started work on weathering more wagons now, now that I’ve more of an idea of what I’m doing, mostly older and or cheap stuff, but I’ve risked a few Bachmann wagons too

Now they DO look good, well done.
Your brake van was a touch too far unless you were going to mark
'Condemned' on the side, or place in an overgrown siding on a
heritage line for spares, or future re-build.

Any more buildings yet ?

Some great looking rolling stock there Michaelaface.I especially like the brake van.

They look quite good and 'dusty', did you use the salt technique for the rust?

I've never heard of this "technique" before. Can you elaborate please Timbersurf?

Can't see the photos here. They say "Image" with a little square next to them. I can see the other photos you put up before. Is the issue at my side or yours?
