Wobbly Dapol 52 totally solved

Post by swiftbeam »

Hi Guys,

Just bringing my info over from somewhere else to share with you as I'm no longer there!

I bought a new Dapol 52 the other month and found it had the wobbly wheel issue! I sent it back to the shop and it came back better, but not fixed. Then went back to DCC Supplies and still not perfect. So I decided to fix it myself!

Basically, the whole issue is down to the wheels not being mounted to the axles properly or the wheel holes not being central. So It's just a case of:-

Remove the wheel sets,
Pull the middle gears off (don't lose the clear spacer!!)
Mount in a lathe (set up first!) and skim off 0.003"
I then score the last 3mm of the axle stub with a scalpel to give the gear a better 'key'.
Resemble using a pair of 1.5mm spacers to mount the gear on centrally.

Now the 52 runs BEAUTIFULLY with absolutely no wobble what so ever !!!!!

So if you have a wobbly 52, you now know you don't need to keep sending it back, just find a person with a lathe!

Sure couldn't, fantastic model but the illusion of size and weight is ruined by the wobble.
Now it's gone, I'm almost tempted to put sound in it :o
