I`m thinking about trying this with canned spray paint, some basic scheme, anyone ever done it ?
Re: Repainting a loco
Lots have! What exactly are you going to do? Difficult to advise without some details.

Re: Repainting a loco
You don't like the colour or you want to get into painting? Practice with something simple and expendable. Like a Dapol kit.

Re: Repainting a loco
I bought a cople of lima loco in the railfreight liveries so i thought using canned spray paint i could create my own livery seen a few vids on you tube but just wondered if any one got any suggestions.
Re: Repainting a loco
Remember to take the chassis off and remove the windows, along with any other part you dont want to be painted. Is interesting.
Why not start on something cheaper as a test like an old secondhand wagon?
Give the paint a bit of a time to settle to check it does not react to the plastic in a bad way. If it does not work out, with a wagon is is cheap and easier to correct by removing old paint and brush painting with model paints.

I resprayed a Class 24 a few years ago and have a page with some pics of it. Might give you an idea of how to go about it. Pick a simple livery to start maybe? Also, have a search for any detailing parts you can get. Pretty sure you'd be able to find etches and the like to improve the detail of the lima locos

Re: Repainting a loco
i haven't done any for a little while but my workbench thread here has some examples of what you're trying to do.
as Mountain says make sure you remove bits, windows especially, as it will be to late after the fact - learnt that the hard way

Re: Repainting a loco
My practice is to carefully remove any parts you do not wish to be painted [or mask them off], strip the body using Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner, wash the body thoroughly, spray it with Halfords' Grey or Red Oxide primer and then apply your top coat. You may need more than one top coat depending on the colour and density of the paint. Allow plenty of time to dry in between coats but remove any masking tape as soon as it is safe to do so.
With auto aerosols, shake the can for longer than is required in the instructions, then warm the can very slightly in warm water [it is ESSENTIAL that the water is NOT very hot or boiling - just warm enough to feel comfortable to the touch when your hand is immersed], shake again and spray. Do not spray in damp or humid conditions.

Try a Dapot Kit it’s simple and very practical.
