Stanley's workshop

Postby bodger » Wed Sep 28, 2016 12:18 pm

Although not railway modelling those of you who like model engineering will enjoy this YouTube video. It shows 80-year-old engineer Stanley Graham in his shed in Barnoldswick describing his lathes which were made by the famous Johnny Pickles and testing engines which he has made for some of his fans. A man with a lot of experience!

The video is on this YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72xgNKPLyHw

His work in the shed is described in detail on the One Guy From Barlick web site in this thread (currently 65 pages long!):

I realised later that I was misleading readers by saying that my first post was not really about model railways but more to do with model engineering in general. In fact there is a link with model railways. Johnny Pickles ran the Brown & Pickles engineering firm in Barnoldswick which was well-known especially for its work on steam engines in the local mills. He was followed by his son Newton Pickles. Stanley Graham, the subject of the video, learnt much of his engineering skills from the Pickles father and son while working as the engine tenter in a Barnoldswick mill. In their spare time Johnny and Newton were never far from engineering and they also made model railway engines. Have a look at this Google page which shows pages from a book by Stanley Graham about Newton & Johnny and there are several photos of their engines:
