Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
Now installed on the lift out section of "Millsend".
Next job for me is back to wagon building, a bargain from the local model shop, an LNER Brake van kit by Parkside Dundas.
Only £1.50 WOW in a bargain bin, an unopened kit. Did I need one? ...... no, could I resist it? ...... no.

Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
Thanks Geoff, it has been a bit of a build really, but pleased with the end result.
A short diversion from wagon building, but after the bridge saga, I am glad
to be back on wagon kits once again haha ..... and at £1.50 who could resist.
I will certainly be checking out the bin on my next visit to the shop!
Hope you enjoy the bogie borail and mineral wagon kits you've ordered, I will
watch for progress reports eagerly.

Tonights bargain basement project.
An old Parkside Dundas LNER Brake Van, just read they lasted till the fifties, my layout is sixties,
but surely one must have survived till then?

Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
Hi Jim,
If not in general revenue traffic I bet they were in 'Departmental' use. Without diagram number I
couldn't confirm, but David Larkin's BR '68-73 says it were so.

Think you're probably right Geoff, departmental use.
One things certain, one lasted long enough to be on Millsend, well it will do when its finished!

Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
Well looks like another diversion from wagon kits!
Backgrounds have arrived this morning, so back to the layout for me it seems.
A couple of new backscenes, an old factory to cut out and detail and a set of arches, similar to a set I bought and give a 3d makeover to in my other topic "backscenes".
They are both 900mm x 250mm in size giving a good expanse.
As mentioned in my other topic, available from Munro Print, tel. 01253 863388, email: sales@munroprint.co.uk. At only £5 per background + p&p I think a good price.
Pictures of the completed scenes when complete. These are how they arrive.

Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
Hi everyone,
Well with summer over, or what summer we've had, it's back to the railway time.
Over the summer I purchased, 'secondhand' a Bachmann Jubilee 'Kolhapur' with sound.
As usual with Ebay, it was described as 'as new', well needless to say it wasn't. cab doors missing,
but that was all and as this loco can be pricey secondhand I decided to keep it.
Another problem with these locos as discussed on many forums is the sound isn't great, so .....
I sent the decoder off to Olivia's Trains for a re-blow. On testing after the re-blow the sound was superb.
Whilst the decoder was being re-blown, I was contacted by Neil at Olivia's, who suggested a speaker mod.
This is simply putting a black gasket substance similar to blue tack around the base of the speaker, lifting it 3 or 4mm higher and
creating a chamber underneath. Which he supplied free. This has also improved the sound quality no end.
That done it is now time to change something else wrong with the loco, 'the drawbar'. This is a seriously long drawbar as can be seen in picture attached.
I presume it is to allow for quite tight radius curves, but does look wrong. So I replaced this with one I made myself, a whole 3mm shorter
which now 'I think' looks much better and negotiates all the curves on 'Millsend'.
The other jobs before sending it off for weathering are the cab door replacement, these I am going to have a go at scratch building and also
the cab floor, which I am going to extend over the gap to the tender. These 2 jobs are also going to be done on a black 5 I have No. 45156.
Luckily I have another black 5 No. 44875 (see picture) which has both sets of doors intact and has had the floor extended already.
I will post pictures as I progress with the additions to both locos.
This final picture shows the doors and extended cab floor, this is how they will both look. (Hopefully).

Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
The shorter drawbar is a definite improvement and should look even better once you've got that gap in the cab floor sorted.
Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
Nice going Jim.
I must check my Jubilee drawbar, I may be wrong, but something I have has two holes so you can
get clearence for 1st radius, or close up.

Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
Skyblue:....The drawbar is a simple fix but testing on your tightest curves is crucial, but improves the look dramatically.
Geoff T:....The Jubilee 'Kolhapur' drawbar has only one hole unfortunately.
Thought I would tackle the black 5 first.
A simple floor using plasticard, measuring twice and fixing once, a little tricky as this loco has fixed wires from loco to tender,
having had sound retro fitted, meaning the loco and tender couldn't be parted to get better access.
The doors again are just plasticard, half cut in the centre to look like they are hinged and painted matt black before fitting, then crew added.
The following pictures show the gap and missing doors before starting, test fitting and finally back on 'millsend' with its sister loco.
The Jubilee is next!

Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
Just a couple of pictures of the Jubilee 'Kolhapur'.
Now fitted with shortened drawbar, cab floor extended and cab doors inplace.
Still need to mix a closer matching green paint for the doors top coat though.
All in all a vast improvement (in my opinion).

Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
Another project started (hopefully this will keep me off wagon building for a while)!
On 'Millsend' I have a raised corner behind some arches which I have never been happy with (are we ever).
I have decided to build a warehouse kit to fill this space, 'Millsend' being industrial, this seemed the right building for it.
Having built one as low relief before, it sits behind the station and fits perfectly, I am using the same kit for this build.
The kit is one of the 'City Classics' range, which are American, but can be made to look British with a little help. They are HO scale but being at the
back of the layout gives the impression of perspective They are available in the UK from quite a few retailers, this one was off ebay.
I have included this picture showing the kit laid out.
They can be cut easily being plastic and are sectional, so quite good for making different shaped buildings.
Progress so far, held together with blue tack and ready for some paint. The small single storey at the side will eventually
have a cut down dapol water tower tank sitting on top of it.
I will show more as I progress with this build.

Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
I must look up where & how much these kits are.
As to being HO, the Americans tended to think big so I would imagine
their 3.5 mm to the foot would come out about the same as we would
have built over here in comparative 4 mm to the foot scale !!
As to keeping you away from Wagons ....... dream on, I bet you have a
few more before the end of winter !!

Re: MILLSEND WORKBENCH/BREAKFAST BAR
Geoff,
'Ah yes', still dreaming of wagons unfortunately!
Forgot to mention price, reasonable at £22.50 inc. carriage. (Ebay).
Much cheaper than Walthers-Cornerstone, but less choice.
