Calder Valley and Scholarsgate Workshops

Postby glencairn » Thu Sep 14, 2017 12:29 pm

Having grown up in Leeds & Dewsbury I have always had an affinity to the areas. Hence I have as part of my 'Railway Empire' a section called Leeds Sovereign Street -- owned by a small independent Railway Company called Calder Railway Company. They own a few 0.4.0 and 0.6.0 locomotives that are purchased from other Companies. They run mainly freight wagons into Sovereign Street. There is also passenger facilities where small four wheeled coaches are run.

There is also another small Railway Company, Leeds, Scarcroft & Wetherby Railway, who have running rights into Sovereign Street. Actually, the engine is another 0.4.0 with L.S.W.R on the side. I just love the colour and haven't the heart to repaint it to Calder Railway blue.

Scholarsgate is in the town of 'Glencairn' ; the other part of my 'Empire'. There was two stations in Glencairn. One belonged to the North British Railway Company; the other to The Caledonian R.C.. Both were terminus stations. Glencairn Scholarsgate Station belonged to the Caledonian Railway Company and survived the Beeching Cuts. The North British Station closed 1967. Now trains arrive from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness.

Pictures to follow.

Leeds, Scarcroft & Wetherby Railway locomotive. As bought. I just love the colours and haven't the heart to repaint it. Hence, LSWR have running rights into Sovereign Street.

Thanks Mountain. In having wagons made with family names and areas I grew up etc. makes it interesting for me when running trains. It also involves my Grandchildren. They see 'their' wagon/s on the layout and helping in shunting etc.

I wonder and smile if anyone else knows the areas portrayed.

A train of Ale wagons arrive at Sovereign Street. Different Companies names printed on paper and applied to wagons.

Up to the age of three I lived at Claro View in Leeds with my Aunt, Uncle and two cousins. The house has long gone,(I think.)

Now I must lay the track for the tram to run.

Very nice. You could get the tram to run automatically via one of those old Gaugemaster automatic shuttle units.

Today I've been looking at most of my locos as I'm making a new stock list. Will have to compile another one at a later date as this is a rough one. One of my class 47's is called that name. Bachmann made a model of 47404 and good it is too!
