Agreed!

Now we know we're looking at an end-to-end layout, the curve problem largely disappears, anyway.

If you can recall what the cover looked like or have a rough idea of the year then maybe you could try looking of ebay to jog your memory
There's thousands of copies of Railway Modeller on there, some are reasonably priced, some aren't.
Preserved railways are also a good hunting ground for railway magazines, normally for dirt cheap prices.
