First attempt at model railways

Postby jay123 » Wed Feb 06, 2013 9:55 am

Hi all, as per the title this is my first attempt at model railways. This is all new to me so if a little basic and out of scale then i appologise now. Ive moved this thread from another section so sorry if some of you have seen the first set of photos elswhere. The initial train set was purchased for my wife a few years back (at here request for christmas) so it all started with the basic oval. She set it up a couple of times and then it got put back in the cupboard where it stayed for a couple of years. Now we have a 5 year old son who found it, asked about it and then wanted it. So appreciating his intrest i decided to make a base board in the loft and started to set it out. The oval soon became boring so a few fer add on packs where purchased to for a second oval, thats where it all went wrong! Daddy got into it and well........ So a few bits and bobs later the track grew, scenery was added to what i thaught was ok and here it is.

Now, i thaught i was doing ok for a first timer, and like always i asked for comments. The comments i got were good as they made comment on all the mistakes i had made. Thankfully im a down to earth kind of person so took it all in my stride and made use of it all. I saw where i had gone wrong and decided the board had to be better. So over the last week i have been a little bussy. Some of you may say that i have been a little harsh on myself for a first attempt but Oh well life goes on. Ive had a little change around on the board and added lots. Yes some of the comments where 'You still have to much white showing' and the truth of it is, i still do. But i am working on it.......Honest! i will now go and take some 'Up to date photoes and add them on here later today for you all to see what ive been upto, i hope i have improved on what was but like i said all this 'Scenery and detail is still new to me' and most of it is trail and error.

Well done so far, keep at it, most of us learn by the mistakes we make, your not expected to know all about it from the offset. If you don't like, or not happy with what you do, don't say to your self 'that'll do', - rip it up and start again ! Research, read, ask questions, don't rush, and have FUN.

Thanks for the comment, i will keep going as im having fun at the moment. I still need to work a few areas that have the dreaded white still in places but some of the board is hard to get to and im having to work from behind some scenes and then have to view it from other angles to see where the white is but ill work it all out in the end. Here are the few photos of how the board has changed over the week.

Hi i think you have a great layout, i have been modeling for some ten plus yr's not continuously. I have reached a stage where i think i am doing ok, Having said that i have just ripped out my control panel because i was not happy with it. There were just to many holes in it from always changing things. So i fully understand where you are coming from, enjoy what you do, it is your layout . Take care.

Sorry chaps and chapesse's, its been a while since i was last on here but hey ho work and family duty must come first. What can i say other than not much has changed on the layout since my last post. Not to say that i have been having fun watching my son spend hours watching the trains go round. I have done a few little changes to the layout so ill have to get the camera out.

The main change that has come from all of this getting into model railways is that my son has got right into it as well. So the wife decided that it was money well and agread that my son should have his own. RESULT.............. So what used to be my office at home has now become the kids play room (or should i say daddies play room......cough cough) and as such we are building a fold away N gauge. This is 4FT x 4FT. The good thing about it all is that i got all my rolling stock for a song. Ill take some piccys tomorrow and update on what we are doing.
