Heljan class 128 "trailer cars"

Postby GWR_fan » Tue Oct 27, 2015 8:30 am

The recent arrival of several class 128 DPU left me thinking of what would make a reasonable load for them to haul. It just seems a waste to have a powerful mechanism simply hauling itself around the track. A search of Hattons site revealed some likely candidates. I had seen a photograph of a Royal Mail DPU with an NSE dmu class 121 and Hattons had just the thing. The dmu was a non-runner which suited me as its sole purpose in life is to be a trailer car only.

For a Midland region DPU in BR blue I saw another candidate in a non-runner blue/grey class 101 three-car set. It seems that it was not uncommon for a DPU to be coupled to a DMU set. The class 101 was DCC fitted so if the decoder is OK then that will be a bonus.

I will attempt to get both the class 121 and the class 101 operative but if not then no loss as my reason for purchasing was for them to be an unpowered trailer set. The class 101 individual cars sell for up to GBP30.00 each, so paying GBP36.00 for a three-car set including a potentially good decoder was not bad value. Similarly the class 121 was had for the price of a coach and current Hornby pricing on the class is usually quite expensive.

I may even toy with the idea of inexpensive onboard lighting in the cars plus a plentiful supply of fare paying passengers.

Edit function not operative. If unable to repair the cars then the motors will be removed and dummy wheelsets fitted utilising the existing power pickups if lighting is to be installed.

I also remember see them at Man Victoria, with a CCT attached.

Cheers

Tony,
the DPU are too powerful a model to just haul themselves around. Alas, my class 101 "trailer cars" are now working so will now need to look for other 'dead' dmu's to haul.

They would be more likey to haul a parcels van or two. Bachmann GUVs would be ideal
