BR London to Eastbourne 1974

Postby BobDM » Mon Dec 11, 2017 3:56 pm

I am planning to model a fictional junction on the main London Victoria to Eastbourne line in 1974 which has through traffic.

Am I right in thinking they used Class 423 units on this line? I am a bit puzzled because these seem to have been 4 coach trains but my memory is that the trains were longer than this with the last 4 coaches being detached at Eastbourne for Hastings etc.

Any guidance would be much appreciated

Trains on the line at this time would have been formed by class 420 (4-BIG) and 421 (4-CIG) for fast services, with class 423 (4-VEP) for semi-fast and stopping services. Fast services may also have used 4-CEP/4-BEP (classes 411 and 410). All of these are 4-car units, 4-BIG and 4-BEP having buffet cars.

Depending on time of day you would have seen 4, 8 or 12-car formations (for example CIG+BIG+CIG) or multiple 4-VEPs.

Trains may have divided at some point but I don't have infomation on that.
