Hey, I'm starting to build a layout based on the Buxton-Derby line which is now the Monsal Trail based between 1948 and 1956. I've already acquired 2 locomotives for the layout and I know what I need to purchase in the future when I have the money.
However, when it comes to coaching stock I am totally useless. I don't know an awful lot about LMS coaches and despite doing some reading up on them, I'm still a bit lost. I've been looking through some books and also David Hey's website which has a lot of photos on the line. There appears to be 3 main types of passenger trains on the line. Trains from Buxton to Derby and Leicester which make up between 4 to 5 coaches. Some appear to be suburban coaches and some aren't. There is the push-pull service to Millers Dale which will need to be kit built but this service was also run by Derby Lightweight DMUs which I can buy. Finally there are trains to and from London which make up about 8 coaches.
Does anyone know what order the coaches should be in and what proportion should be ex-LMS and what should be BR mk1s? If anyone can point me towards where I can find some more information on this line and train formations in the region?
Also, if anyone knows anything about parcel trains in the Midland region that would be very helpful too.

Thanks!
Also, has anyone read 'Through Limestone Hills'? What sort of information does the book contain?

Just joined the forum following this thread from a Google search.
Are you still interested in coach formations?
I have compiled a large spreadsheet of data from District Controller's View #6 (WTT of all freight and passenger operations over the Peak, MR Buxton & Hope Valley) and Operation Midland (Carriage diagrams over the Peak). Both of these books are from Xpress Publishing and are highly recommended.
Would be happy to send you the spreadsheet and other book recommendations, including Through Limestone Hills which you asked about.
Cheers,
