HSTs tend not to run below 2+5 due to brake issues, but have been known to run in service as short as 2+2, I think most likely bets for a 2+4 would be shortened Grand Central HST sets (they are normally 2+5 or 2+6), the short sets Virgin used for a few years with a coach short (normally 2+5), or stock moves and driver training (could be anything from just two power cars up to a full set).

Grand central usually run as follows:

First - Buffet - Second - Second - Second (This is often a declassified first class coach)

So potentially the 6 car would have no 1st or would it have 1 less 2nd

Whatever coach "failed" would be taken out, so it could be any of them, I don't think they deliberately run shorter than 2+5... The shortest we ran on XC in Virgin days was a 2+3 when most of the coaches on one failed over a few days and were gradually removed so leaving just the three, the 2+5s we ran were to "top up" the Voyagers during their early engine problems, they were supposed to be able to keep to Voyager timings, but didn't work that well.
