Cheap rail travel
Cheap rail travel
Booked again through East Coast web site for cheap travel.
£ / person
£10 Grantham - London (standard class)
£25 London - Edinburgh (first class)
£25 Edinburgh - Grantham (first class)
Going to be a long day.
Also planning to do, in the next few weeks Euston to Scotland on the night sleeper before it's all scraped.
Anyone have any suggestions as to which final destination to go to please.

Re: Cheap rail travel
I'm also talking advantage of the cheap East Coast tickets.
06:10 Doncaster - Edinburgh 09:24 (£10)
19:00 Edinburgh - Doncaster 22:16(£10)
Plus for just over £20 i'm doing the following whilst in Scotland:
Edinburgh - Edinburgh Fife Circle (£5.95)
Edinburgh - North Berwick Return (£4.30)
Edinburgh - Glasgow Return (£8.00)
Glasgow Subway (£3.50)
So good value for money me thinks

Is this the Oliver off the Facebook N gauge group? lol
Sounds a fun day. I have the other half, so have to contend with 5 1/2 hrs of fun in Edinburgh

The final refurbishment of the BT10B bogies has just gone out to tender, which will take the Mark 3A sleepers to the middle of the next franchise, when they will be replaced
The Glasgow sleeper is to be withdrawn during the next franchise, that is the only major change
Couple of choices
Fort William sleeper, but it does mean taking a sprinter back to Glasgow, can then take the late evening Euston service back to London (as I prefer Class 390 and the WCML)
Inverness sleeper, arrives just in time to swap over to the King Cross HST back to London
Aberdeen sleeper, arrives with plenty of time to take the next Kings Cross HST back to London, but the scenery is rather dull, although you do get both the Forth and Tay bridges

Re: Cheap rail travel
Good prices! Try the Glasgow to Fort William, Fort William to Mallaig. Quite nice!
Re: Cheap rail travel
Thanks for the suggestions.
As for the return, I'll prob go from Inverness having to change at York back to Grantham.
On the route up tho, is there time to hop off the train to see the train split or not, without fear of being left behind!

Equally, the staff don't really like people doing this
Furthermore the passenger doors remain locked, you need to use the guards door on the BUO
The passenger doors are briefly opened on the Fort William portion, this is the last to leave northbound
You can see all the locos if you are in the Fort William portion, as this is the northern end of the train as it arrives in Edinburgh, but you need to make sure you are aware well before you arrive in Edinburgh
I woke up as the train passed through Carstairs, sat in the Lounge Car until we passed through Haymarket, as you need to be in the Fort William portion after that!

There are no suggestions that the Sleeper will be scrapped in the near term - the Scottish Parliament has agreed to match Westminster's offer of £50m for refurb/replacement of the sleepers.
If you have enough time then sleeper to Fort William, bus to Inverness and sleeper/normal train back to London could be quite good.
Or if you have longer then sleeper to Fort William, train to Mallaig, ferry Mallaig - Armadale, bus Armadale - Kyle of Lochalsh (if they are still running), train Kyle of Lochalsh - Inverness (and beyond) would be fun!

The proposals mean it IS going, passengers from Glasgow and Motherwell will travel from Edinburgh instead

Re: Cheap rail travel
If you are spending a day in Glasgow, the daytripper ticket at £10.50 for unlimited travel in the SPT area is a good investment.

Re the Glasgow Sleeper, I think that there will be a lot more discussion befpre a final decision is taken to completely withdraw this service, don't start planning your "last run" yet!!

No, but the OP suggested all the Sleepers were going.m8internet wrote: Did you miss the bit about the Glasgow sleeper?

I can't say it surprises me that the Glasgow sleeper is going, in fact I am surprised the Edinburgh one is surviving! The Glasgow/Edinburgh sleeper always seemed a bit of a half way house and never as busy as the other one.
It will be a shame though as it was useful for a later night departure plus it meant daylight travel on the WHL/HL if you changed onto normal trains. And of course it will put even more pressure on the Fort William/Inverness/Aberdeen sleeper which is often full to the limit.
Cheers, Mike

The Edinburgh sleeper is almost always full, compared to the Glasgow sleeperred death wrote:I can't say it surprises me that the Glasgow sleeper is going, in fact I am surprised the Edinburgh one is surviving! Equally, when the Aberdeen / Inverness / Fort William are full passengers are usually offered a connection plus either the Edinburgh or Glasgow sleeper (more often the Edinburgh as the relevant connections are easier)
There will actually be less pressure on the Fort William / Inverness / Aberdeen sleeper
Removing the Glasgow sleeper will release 12 sleepers to be used on the other services
The main issue at the moment is dealing with capacity on the Fort William in summer weekends, which results in it borrowing one sleeper from the Aberdeen portion
The first part of the proposal is to tag the Fort William to the Edinburgh service
This will allow some Glasgow passengers to use this service (already serving Westerton, Dalmuir, and Helensburgh)
The Aberdeen and Inverness will remain tagged together
However this means the sets will no longer be in their fixed 8 coach formations and so will require remarshalling at Wembley and rotation from Aberdeen
The second part of the proposal is complete rolling stock replacement
Option A is for seven (6+1) sets of eight coaches and three (2+1) sets of three coaches
Option B is for fifteen (12+3) sets of four coaches
It is hoped the DfT extend this to the FGW rolling stock, it makes sense to replace both at the same time, as Option B can then be extended to FGW for five (4+1) sets, plus it allows interoperation between the two franchises for overhauls, etc
