Train on the streets

Postby lippmann » Wed Jan 04, 2012 9:57 am

Years ago on tv I saw film of a south coast town
with a passenger train moving (slowly) along a
street with parked cars and pedestrians watching.

Where , when and why was this, and when
did it last occur?

Sounds like one of the boat trains... Weymouth was a good example, though there were others...

Just to add there are plenty of other examples of trains on streets, one of the better known narrow gauge examples, still running, is the Molli where the line runs right down the High street!

Although street running of passenger trains was rare in this country, elsewhere it is not only common but frequent. This is Nagasaki, where regular commuter trains run down a main road.

Yankiedoodleland is the place for street running, 10000 tonne trains trundling down the center of the road. In Oakland alone theres street railways all over the place.

It is quite strange given the space that is over here in North America. I could be wrong but I don't think we have anything like that here in Canada.

Not really that strange when you think of it, the railways came first in many places and the towns then grew around the railroad, frequently swallowing up the land that the railroads were built on and had a right of passage through. In most cases in the US it is the town encroaching on the railroad rather than the railroad invading the streets.
