New Class of loco for DRS (Class 68?)

Postby 44007 » Fri Aug 05, 2011 3:36 pm

According to Railway Illustrated this is no longer a rumour and the deal should be signed this month:

'Vossloh has offered DRS a "revised price" on ordering 20 Eurolight 4000 locomotives in late July and a deal was expected to be tied up in early August.'

Looks pretty much like a class 67 hybred: ... nline.html

I also believe (but stand to be corrected) the same company is working on the class 90 replacement planned for the East Anglia region to run with the mk3s on the new franchise once NXEA's expires. The Eurolight 4000 uses the same GE powerplant as our 67s.

"Bombardier believes that the Traxx P200 AC UK Bo-Bo electric locomotive fitted with a ‘last mile’ diesel engine would offer ‘a lot of value for money’ for UK operators such as Greater Anglia. Whereas the MkIII coaches used on London – Norwich inter-city services are ‘excellent’ vehicles that may last for another 20 years, the Class 90 locomotives will need to be replaced before that." ... hises.html

The loco might struggle to pull the coaches in the artists impression

I understand that units are being considered for the East Anglia franchise. They thought about it a long time ago. I was told that GB rail thought of 10 or 12 car Desiro's.
