Deltics are Being returned to service

Postby bocaj » Mon May 30, 2011 7:47 am

Hi everyone

Not sure if any one has herd but I saw on the news this morning that some Deltics are being returnedto service for a few weeks at least.
They will be used for pulling freight until the freight companies can get some more locomotives which can pull the freight.

I doubt it, I've got a feeling this may be a one off thing... and I reckon a 37 would be used before a 50

No chance, 37's are not as powerful would need 2 of them a 50 has 2,700 hp compared with the 37's under 2,000 rating.
Yeagh probably is a one off, but nice to see a proper loco back out working again :D

Theres plenty of 37's to go round, and as they are already in service with a few companies, they surely would be one of the first to be called up.

Maybe, but if they want extra power a 50 would be better, in the last few years in traffic 50's would quite happily trundle around pulling heavy engineering trains.
As they are using Deltic 22 i am suggesting they need something more powreful than a 37.

Hi everyone

I don't think the class 50's will be returning to service but the 37's might
The thing with the deltics though is just a one of until they get some more modern loco's in

We will have to wait and see, i am sure if The Alliance recieve a call they will rise to the occasion.
Fantastic to see Deltic 22 working again, a real beauty and a proper loco unlike todays boxe's on wheels.

The issue is not the type of loco, but does it have all the necessary paperwork and equipment to return to service

The deltic has great appeal, both as a passenger (charter) and freight loco (ironically it rarely hauled non-passenger trains in BR ownership)
The Class 50 is probably next, but as things stand none of the owners want them returned to main line service
The Class 37 is therefore next, but there are already several already operating so it may be some time before any preserved examples return to main line service

However, if the FOC was willing to pay for the equipment then any preserved loco could return to limited freight use
Finally, the payments would be on a commercial basis so the income would be guaranteed, assuming the loco remained reliable

I love AR's loyalty, but to be realistic if they are to bring any loco back into service its most likely to be another 37 or a 47 in preference to a 50... Use of a Deltic smacks of desperation in the first place....

I saw that report on BBC Breakfast this morning and I found it just slightly misleading.

To call her a "museum piece" and say she's been "brought out of retirement" would, I imagine, lead the uninitiated to think that that particular Deltic had spent the last thirty years in the NRM or some such place, and they just dusted her off, started up the engines and off she went.

Even the way they portrayed enthusiasts at the lineside taking photos gave the impression that it was a unique opportunity to see a Deltic anywhere on the mainline, rather than the unique part being the opportunity to see one hauling freight.

Maybe I'm just being fussy. Go on, tell me I am :)

It could be, the two engine thing, and if that is the case if one was available they might be looking for phrehaps a Western next.
What is wrong with a Deltic?? so far much better than a rancid old strumming devise.
I agree with minternet a 50 would be next popular to a Deltic from an Enthusiats point of view. :D
As regards mainline i am not so sure, but of course i am loyal (are you surprised?)
