Live US webcam. Addictive!

Postby Zunnan » Sun Apr 03, 2011 3:38 pm

I've wasted half the day with this on in the background!

Its easy to tell when a trains coming, you can hear the horns of approaching trains while they're still miles away. Its Sunday morning there and the traffic is still pretty intensive.

The traffic has been unreal for the past hour or so, quietened down a bit recently though. Basically the webcam watches over THIS crossing which covers two busy rail routes which also cross on the level, hence the incredible noise as the trains thunder across a couple of diamond crossings no matter which way they are travelling.

Pure Magic!! As soon as i 'tuned in' The gates were seen to close and 2 (or was it 3?) locos passed with about 105 bogie wagons, I think bulk mineral wagons. I may have missed the count as I was distracted by a car which seemed to arrive from between the tracks.

Thanks for that, Mac

Fabulous :)

How long are those trains. Imagine trying to model a full size train like that in HO  It's hard enough finding space to run a Deltic with 9 Mk2 coaches :D

You need about 70ft of track to fit in a scale length H0 train of say 4 units and 100 or so cars, so a full circuit would need to be pretty big!

If you think that would be demanding modelling look at this crossing on Google Maps then try the junction about half a mile East.

Not only addictive but fascinating!

This just appeared, run up and down the track, lowered its road wheels and drove off down the road.

The train in the background comprised 2 loco's and about 135-140 container trucks. They must have been at last 80' long which makes the total train getting on for 2 miles long.

Cheers Zunnan, this is dangerously addictive! The length of some of the trains you see on it is ridiculous! You wouldn't want to be someone driving up to the crossing and get caught by the lights!

Cheers,

when I visited my uncle in Canada in 87 and worked with him for a few days on his truck, we were late one morning and got to the local railroad crossing just as the morning freight set off from the depot, my uncle turned the engine off, and shook his head, the guys in the pick-up behind us left it and walked over the road to the local coffee shop, and had breakfast, we got coffee's and went back to the truck, it took 20 minutes to pass, it had 5 loco's and I stopped counting coal cars after 140, as it started off from a dead stop it seamed to take forever to pass, but the last coal car must have been going 50 mph, if you like long trains Canada is the place.

But why? British stuff makes you want to *yawn*. I watched one of the WCML webcams, it was a choice of either Pendolino, 350, or class 66 with containers. The only true variation was if there was 18 or 20 behind the 66.
