NSE livery (why dislike?)

Postby 50035 Ark Royal » Thu Jun 24, 2010 8:19 pm

Apart from me and some other select members of this forum no one likes this livery. Why is this? Granted i was shocked when i first saw it  However with the passing of time i think this is one of the more tasteful liveries. The revised dark blue especially looks good on locomotives,emu/dmu and rolling stock. After all as Chris Green intended it is red white and blue which is the colour of our flag of this great country.
So why few people like it?
Not represented well in OO/ N or on preserved and heritage locomotives

Because people bang on about it too much, same with the class 50, I'm beginning to loath it.

I never used to like it, but the Grandparents live in Ashford, so they get a lot of NSE traffic and it's started to grow on me. :D

47's aren't really my thing, I do like them, but I prefer Sulzer type 2's :D

Cumulative effect

In a uniform rake it looks relatively good, but when mixed into other liveries it looks overly busy to the point of becoming an eyesore. There are many privatisation liveries which are worse but NSE just doesn't work when mixed with other liveries.

I actually quite like the Class 33 in NSE and would buy one if it were available for sale in my scale, I don't really fancy doing any work myself though.

I do agree looks odd with blue/grey, looks ok with Inter-city but looks excellent as you say in a uniform rake.I also think the NSE 47's looked odd with red parcels or res stock. That is probably why they were quickly repainted. Is there anything left on the current Network Rail running in this livery.
I think Large logo looks good with any thing with the exception of older steam era stock on preserved railways.
That explains why it is not broadly represented in model form as phrehaps the maufacturers do not see it as a good seller as only a few model the era.

No don't blame you as you model in N.I have seen bodies of 33035 on ebay or if you got plenty of dosh you could get CJM to do one for you.
Yeagh i like the 33's my favourite small diesel.I remeber them best in banger blue livery with 4tc stock but not available in rtr in either 00 or N.
I like the 33/1's best but only two painted in NSE livery 035 and 114.

It would have worked better if the main red/white waistband lining matched the height and dimensions of the other sectors of the time; ie Intercity, Provincial and Scotail. Even with the extra grey lower band, it would have worked better had the lining matched everything else meaning that when stock and locos did stand in or transfer, they fitted in with everything else.

Didn,t think much to the early nse livery, but the latter revised one was a much improvement and suited class 47/50s.It is a much sort after livery in n gauge but saying that the mk2 a-c coaches have nether been produced in inter-city blue/grey but have in nse livery.

Notwork South East livery was ok, but it soon faded and looked terrible once this had happended. It found it's way into East Anglia and indeed Peterborough and March stations even got a Notwork South East makeover, the livery looked hideous on the station buildings, 1980's tat at it's best. That said class 47's and 101 DMU's looked very smart when the livery was clean and new.
