What's the most UGLIEST train in the history ofthe universe?

Postby Curler Guy » Thu Jan 28, 2010 7:05 am

What is the most ugilest train ever??

For me, it is, hands down, the new class 70, and that's something coming from me who's seen plenty of foreign things!!

So, the new Class 70.

Can anyone GENUINELY top that?? (I don't mean all that tongue in cheek 'oh the LNER was ALWAYS better than the GWR!' mallarkey!, I mean GENUINELY UGLY trains!!).
A bunch of sewerage farm workers from the North West were visiting Blackpool on a day trip when one of them was overcome by the fresh air and fainted.
It took 7 buckets of S**t just to bring them round again!

Heck, even the humble old DB class 155 is positively Adonis like compared to a '70!!

I know some people like 'em, but the SR Q1 always looks the ugliest SG loco to me... though there's an Indian NG loco where they extended the tanks right to the front which look worse!

The Q1 may look like second place in a Lego building competition, but you do have to realise that they DID have an excuse and I actually quite like them (I've had haulage behind the preserved one on the Bluebell line, and I've seen it since also).

I'll need to see these Indian locos (It's a country that so far I seem to have neglected - I was thinking this earlier as I was thinking of the big steam locos that they really go to town with when tarting up).

Annyway, the PKP SU45s are just big and bulky, but aren't actually very ugly or anything .....the SU46, however ... all I can say is 'The farther away, the better!!':

The Poles do have the last laugh though in that they still actually HAVE loco hauled trains!

Yep, the Q1 was produced during a time of austerity (DAS KRIEG). functional and in a strange kind of a way, it is both ugly and beautiful at the same time.

Strangeness and beauty often go hand in hand it is said, and who am I to argue with that?

Why do you think I like so many rancid old foreign trains for example??

Actually in this respect, the Westerns are just about the only UK modern image locos that seem to stand out from the crowd as far as am concerned. Class 07 is another.

The '70s stand out too, but for entirely the WRONG reasons!

Does this count...?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Talgo_350.jpg

It's the Spanish S-102 AVE, nicknamed (unsurprisingly) the duck.

Perhaps not so much ugly, as just weird. Apparently the design reduces noise significantly.

That's as maybe, but I just can't help imagining the scene at Bombardier one day, when a cutting edge design boffin turned round to his mates and said "'Ere lads, you should see what I've just come up with - this'll make you chuckle!".

Ouch!!

No, there is a fine line between something just being weird and strangely beautiful, and being ugly and strangely, umm, ugly, and that ... that .... THING (is it really a train?? no, seriously! ) is more certainly in the latter category.

Q1 is a class locomotive, maximum tractive effort with minimum weight per axle, form and function over beauty. To my mind it's Bullieds finest design.

This on the other hand is totally ****ing ugly.............

A slight aside, but the Pendolinos on the WCML aren't called Dildolinos for nothing you know!!

I prefer the equally suggestive Bendylino though.

Starnge to say this, but for a while I could only have suggested that the Bulleid Q1 was the ugliest engine around.
Now I've grown to appreciate it in the last year or so,though I have no reason why to explain.
So I can't actually put forward an example to this topic,as there are many that I DO like
