Webb Coal Tank
Webb Coal Tank
I'm delighted to say my Webb Coal Tank has arrived.
Talk about a slim Jim loco .....Certainly designed for lines with
limited clearances.
A comparison to a 3F Jinty by my goods platform.
My difficulty for a while may be that the last time I checked the
new 18 pin decoders were not yet available. However why do I want
that many contacts within my decoders system. As the locomotive
seems to have crossed-over connections with my normal forwards
giving reverse I may try one of the £12 Hornby 4 pin decoders and
hard wire in, then with a CV change I can reverse motion .....
Still thinking, not run-in on DC yet.

Re: Webb Coal Tank
Bachmann next 18 decoders are definitely available. I have one in my coal tank and you are right it's a lovely loco.

Surely that's the clearance or good excuse for cab steps.

I've mine too Geoff although I have not been able to run it yet. It is, however, a fine looking model. There's been a deal of concern on RMWeb about poorly fitted wipers on the Coal Tank, fouling frogs etc. Mine seem pretty tight though.

Re: Webb Coal Tank
Its not a case that the Coal Tanks needs 18 contacts, rather its that the Next18 socket is the latest small socket effectively replacing the 6 pin socket that Bachmann would have otherwise have fitted. The Hornby 4 pin decoder is a Hornby bodge - there is not such standard DCC socket and the decoder is merely Hornbys cheapest one wired to a 4 pin plug - interestingly Hornby International (Jouef etc) do fit standard 6 pin sockets instead of the silly Hornby UK 4 pin. Next 18 decoders are available and will give far better performance that the Hornby 4 pin; apart from the Bachmann one there are (list not necessarily exhaustive)Dad-1 wrote:\My difficulty for a while may be that the last time I checked the

CT Elektronik SL76 Next 18
ESU LokPilot Micro v4 with Next18
Zimo MX618
There are also a couple of sound decoders (which would make use of more of the contacts)
ESU LokSound Micro V4 - Next18
Zimo Next 18 Sound Decoder MX658N18
Re: Webb Coal Tank
If you do go down the hard wiring route, there's no need to alter CV29 for direction, just wire it up properly.

Re: Webb Coal Tank
Another good addition to the list of small old locos that are becoming available. Hopefully we will see yet more of such 'small fry' which were a very charming feature of the steam period. Old they may have been, but there were any number of classes of small locos that remained essential to work the railway system until its drastic pruning in the final two decades of steam operation. It's a lovely characterful old thing as a model and I can see myself buying one of these in time.
For a long time, the only decent really small OO RTR steam choices were the Dapol tooled and then bought by Hornby, 'Terrier' A1 0-6-0T and L&Y class 21 0-4-0ST. The choice now is becoming more diverse, my own favourite the J15; improbably small for an 0-6-0 tender loco, yet working on the main lines until the early 1960s. In addition to the announced 1P 0-4-4T, B4 0-4-0T and J70 0-6-0T tram engine, there remains a very large choice of such small subjects for the manufacturers to choose among.

The location of the wipers on the centre and rear coupled wheels is such that the inevitable small variations that occur in any assembly make it vulnerable to some of the production having one or more of these catching in a flangeway. Some proportion of the purchasers will find this problem. Simple return and exchange job I would suggest; although a good DIY fix has now been demonstrated, folding over the wiper tips to lift them above rail top and thus at no risk of fouling in flangeways.Lysander wrote:...There's been a deal of concern on RMWeb about poorly fitted wipers on the Coal Tank, fouling frogs etc....
Re: Webb Coal Tank
Hi Mike Parkes,
Of course there's no 'standard' for the 4 pin Hornby decoder and as you say it's something of a bodge
to enable them to provide a suitable decoder for their small Pecket & Sentinel locos. I have put one
in a Sentinel and I'm certain it's simply a R8249 with just 4 short leads and small plug. Obviously
running steam locomotives without sound, or any intention to add sound later, all I need are the 4
drive connections ie. Orange & Grey, plus pick-up Red & Black.
I have now located a Next 18 and have made arrangements to get one (Big 'H' still out) It's so much
easier to just plug something in, although I have no concerns about hard wiring decoders in and where
necessary removing unwanted leads by de-soldering from the decoders. In fact my Roxey Hollingbury
Tram kit needed leads removing from a Lenz silver mini space was so tight !!
I also have no trouble whatsoever using the R8249 and performance I can get is so similar to a Zimo
running in a Castle that I'm perfectly happy with them. The decoder I've had trouble with in the past
have been Bachmann 21 pin, but those can be sorted out, it just takes time & the inclination.
Peterm, now I've got a next 18 coming no need to meddle with wires so a CV29 change is coming, all
of 10 seconds to change.

Re: Webb Coal Tank
Good to hear all the positive reports so far, I was going to buy one on the first day of release from kernow but thought I'd wait to hear some feedback.
Re: Webb Coal Tank
Hi Sails,
So far so good. Decoder now in and running around St Oval with it's 1st Radius curves ....
BUT it'll only go in one direction, it derails if going the other way.
Mind you as it's a minimum second radius it's looking like when loosened up it just
may work both ways.
The Next 18 decode seems a rather loose fit .... it was plugged in with very little pressure.
That makes a change from those overly tight 21 pin fitments !!
I might do a video with it pulling a load of .... coal ?
Perhaps tomorrow.

Re: Webb Coal Tank
Sounds good Geoff,
If you produced a quick video it would be great. Interested in what you said about the right turns as I thinking a relatively tight turning layout for these smaller locos.

Hi Sails,
How about this :-
https://youtu.be/iV9tpBJEWJw
Although Bachmann say 2nd radius minimum it ran O.K in this direction.
I checked my track with a roller gauge and found that some of my track
is under gauge enough for the roller to not engage correctly and it's in
that location where it de-rails. So although you can never be certain I'd
say it should work on accurate 1st radius curves.

That reminds me, I must upload my video of my L&Y pug pulling 31 wagons up a 1 in 100
Re: Webb Coal Tank
Just to add, mine ran faultlessly out of the box.

Thanks for the clip Geoff, got mine this afternoon, now I just need to find the box with the track and controller in it after the chaos of this months house move.
