"Doubleheading" class 416 EMU sets

Postby GWR_fan » Sat Apr 02, 2016 12:16 am

An opportunity arose to acquire an inexpensive class 416, #31-377 in new condition. As I have an existing set I would like to run the sets together. Is there a protocol as regards how the sets are coupled together?

No just introduce them to each other first. Being serious I would think that if you coupled them both as they advise and run them in the same direction you should be OK

Many thanks. I saw one photo of a coupled set of four cars and the guards end of the cars were towards the centre of the sets. Doing this on the model though would have a red light at either end in the end doors.

Usually if I am running units in multiple, I prefer to couple the motor bogie ends together (i.e. the van ends on the EPB units). However, the running qualities of the Bachmann units are so good it really doesn;t matter which way you do it. I have run three sets together with no problems.

I use Kadee couplers on the outer ends of all my EMUs, usually #18 or 19, but it depends on your curve radii.

Edit: I have uploaded a video taken back in 2012 showing two of my EPB units running, with the motor bogie (van) ends leading on both units, as well as two four car units of other stock running individually. As you can see, they run perfectly together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4SOohcMALY&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=JeffreyLynn
