Re: bachmann class 158 dmu question
The Bachmann 158 is, currently, not DCC ready. Bachmann have been promising a DCC ready version for a few years now. The unit can be fitted with one or two decoders depending on how much work you want to put into it and what sort of curves you have on your layout. The unit has directional lights fitted as standard (yellow/red), however these can be improved with the Express Models lighting kit. I'm not certain what LEDs you would need to buy to improve the lighting yourself, but unless you want realistic lights there is little point in changing them and if you want that, why not have the Express Models kit?.....
Converting to DCC is simple enough, the usual red and black wires from the pick ups are attached to the red and black wires of the decoder and the orange/grey wires of the decoder go to the motor terminals. Wiring for the lights depends what decoder you have, but a Hornby decoder will have atleast three wire to attach to each set of lights. if using one decoder you will need to drill holes in the model for the wires to pass though.
