Class 37 dcc problems

Postby richsam » Sun Dec 03, 2017 3:43 pm

Hi all.

Got brand new class 37 the other day. Br blue small logo
I fitted a 21 pin bachmann decoder and all seemed fine

However, the loco moves as smoothly as before however now and again it stops and all the lights flash, like a strobe.
Any ideas?
I'm using a hornby select by the way. I believe they are not a great controller.

Just a thought, is it doing it over points or on straight track, if over points it might be shorting somewhere

Flashing lights is a sign of a short but not a track short, this will be somewhere on board. Check that no part of the decoder can touch anything on the chassis/body. It looks as though the decoder is protecting itself by shutting down.

The Hornby Select is not NMRA-compliant and is known to have issues like these with Bachmann decoders.

Do you have an information sheet with the decoder that tells you what the strobing lights indicate? (As already posted it does suggest the decoder protecting itself against a problem.) If it isn't clear what this means, contact Bachmann service and ask the question. You should include all the details about the decoder version, found on the packaging or the information sheet. (I just took a look at Bach's site, and the DCC help section is 'not helpful' all the FAQ's are inaccasible, among other things!)

Thanks for the replies guys. Some more investigation needed I think.
Might start with a new dcc controller and go from there

That is a good start. Make sure you get one that can access all CV's and is fully NMRA compliant. No recommendations as we all like our own.
Pete.
