OO9 Clearances

I'm contemplating a simple double oval test track for N gauge and it crossed my mind that with the new ready-to-run OO9 loco and rolling stock becoming available, it might be worthwhile to provide sufficient clearance for the larger scale too. Can anyone advise me what the gap between running lines should be, especially on the end loops?

Almost the same as for standard gauge of the larger scale is the quick answer. There may be places where it can be reduced, particularly if you favour "narrow gauge buried in the grass" or you are modelling the Ffestiniog.

Sorry, Bufferstop but I have to disagree with you! I'm assuming that KM is planning to use the L&B bogie coaches which are much smaller than OO scale SG therefore clearances will be less.

I'll put a thread on NGRM and see if anyone knows the answer...

Even if the clearances for vehicle bodies was less than for standard gauge stock the space required for people, and wheeled traffic remains the same so overall the layout of stations and goods yards remains much the same. If the O/P isn't intending just one prototype best make allowance for an SAR/Welsh Highland Garrat which must be high on the list of likely candidates if those presently planned sell well. I read John De Frayssinet saying how short a distance his County Gate locos could travel when placed on the N scale layout "Owdham".

I did ask and one of the regulars came back with this, based on using the L&B coach:

"I just checked with my brake end coach on a 9" (225mm) radius curve. You need 21mm from the track centre, inside and out. This leaves about 2mm clear from the footboards and the brake ducket. Laying a curve outside the 9" radius at 11" radius (275mm) will ensure you have enough space. You may try narrowing the outer radius to 265 or 270mm. Overall width needed for double track will be 580 or 590mm."

The issue over SG coaches are the extras on NG that tend to stick out on bends such as steps and footboards. Fair point regarding the likes of Garrets etc!

Bufferstop, thanks for your comment which would normally be very valid. In my specific circumstances, there is the opportunity to put an N gauge test track, or possibly double loop, inside a club's long OO dog bone test track; there are no buildings nor any scenery. The available width is 170mm between the straights, but much more inside the end loops. It just occurred to me that it would be sensible to plan for OO9 clearances in case any member should have an urge to have a go with narrow gauge.
