Yeah the magnet was remagnetized, and an original one. And hm... Kinda seems like it might be good to try a decoder that can handle like 2A continuous or more. Anyone know about any cheap high amp decoders?

There aren't any that I know of. Zimo have a 1.8A decoder at a reasonable price which might do the job for the 900mA stall current you measured. Here's a list from Coastal DCC run by Kevin Dickerson (and I would take his advice first, good guy, very experienced and helpful).

As you can see prices for yet bigger output are not small. This decided me when adopting DCC that it was clearly best adapted to modern low current draw motors, and to eliminate ye olde open frame types...
