Thanks SRman, I thought that was the case but the 'spare' brown wire threw me. Hopefully I won't need the stay alive but wanted to be sure what I was doing before diving in.

The brown is a function wire. The NEM652 8-pin plug does not have enough pins for all the decoder's functions. Get the PluX version (MX600p) and all the functions will be on pins.

With the MX600 the blue wire can be used for connecting a stay alive, but the ground connections are pretty awkward to solder to. I've done a few, but ruined one so I now use the MX617F where the pads are easy to solder to.

The other wires I will cut off but leave a short length (insulated) so that I can connect to them in future if I decide to add lights.

Whats puzzling me is that although the connector is 8 pin there are 9 wires, the 9th being brown.

My question is if I need to add a stay alive am I right in saying I need the blue wire which I think is +V
and does the other wire on the stay alive connect to the pad at the back of the decoder or to the brown wire which as far as I can make out is -V

Thanks chaps, all useful information, hopefully I wont need to add a stay alive but if I do I can decide whether to try my hand at the soldering or use a different decoder.
