Since the decoder is in a Next18 socket there should be little chance of a short on the outputs, barring an event such as a major malfunction on the motor. A short on the outputs is a potential problem but most decoders now have some protection, though I am totally ignorant of the Doehler and Haass product provision, never having encountered their decoders.
