I did a thing accidentally yesterday that rarely happens, left the layout powered unattended for several hours. On returning and resuming operation there was a collision with a dead woodmouse. I have been aware that woodmice do occasionally 'trespass' onto the tracks of my layout which is in an outbuilding adjacent ancient woodland. (The owl pellets found under one of our trees give regular evidence of plentiful wee timorous beasties hereabouts, and my Mrs expends much effort in protecting overwintering plants in the greenhouse from their nibbling.)
Unless it just happened to die from natural causes while on the tracks, I have to guess that the DCC power did for it.
Are mice DCC incompatible?
Re: Are mice DCC incompatible?
Shocking !!
Does your line have adequate fencing ? You do realise that you are responsible
for any accidents to trespassers.
Ahhhh what a shame !!

This will mean an Elf and Safe Tea inquiry of course, you could be facing charges of failing to inform the local rodents of potential electrocution , lack of warning signage. I trust you have a Risk Assessment in place!!!!

Now if you had a rat on the line, it would have worked fine (tecup tecup tecup tecup)
Actually the first thing that I thought of when I saw the thread was "why use a computer mouse to control trains"!!!

This escapes notice as 'undetected crime': the whole garden is a regular 24/7 killing field by the actions of foxes, weasels and predatory birds, which are active day and night. Among the more spectacular, wood pigeons downed by peregrines, squirrels eaten by foxes and red kites, (the latter are not just scavengers, twice seen one with squirrels that only received their quietus by a fair amount of gory ripping apart) weasel dragging a mole along, and an (escaped) eagle owl that took a muntjac deer fawn. The mice simply die in hordes: in summer with the windows open there's a terminal squeak cum shriek - the woodmouse has a very distinctive and loud cry when frightened, see below - audible every night before slumber overtakes me...Dad-1 wrote:...You do realise that you are responsible for any accidents to trespassers...
When my wife's greenhouse plants suffered from mouse attack, she bought humane mouse traps; and guess who was instructed to release the captives a mile away so they wouldn't find their way back? It was only when she finally came on the walk with me and saw that they may be alive when humanely trapped, but they typically die of fright before release, that this scheme was abandoned.

Bigmet, Squirrels,
Used to send them on a summer holiday - not saying where, or how.
Killing field, just as well you don't have a live steam track, or Brock
could be undone !!
Some things are more crafty than other, scruffy an old male pheasant
used to come and see us when the younger males were trying to get rid
of him. He knew he could have a safe biscuit out of our hand, the others
wouldn't dare to come near.
Better get back to Alternating current topics ...... I suppose ......

Re: Are mice DCC incompatible?
Just as other useful predators have re-established, I understand from a lifelong friend now enjoying the Trossachs, that the Pine Marten is on the way back big time, and takes the greys in preference to the (more difficult to catch and a smaller meal) native red, long absent in these parts. I'd be all for that, the super tree stoat...Dad-1 wrote:Bigmet, Squirrels,

Re: Are mice DCC incompatible?
Yes there are Pine Martins in Upper Weardale, and the Squirrels are Red.
Re: Are mice DCC incompatible?
Not a lot to say really. Install Lenz standard or Zimo MX6xx series decoder on loco as best suits, programme and operate on a Lenz 100 set up, everything 'just works' smoothly, quietly and reliably. No news is good news, but does make for dull reading...Dad-1 wrote:...Better get back to Alternating current topics ...
We stayed at Blanchland Northumberland this summer, and saw a few reds, but no Pine Marten because we are past sitting out all night with the IR gear! Last time I saw one was in Ennerdale while staying at Black Sail hut in 1975. Probably needs a reintroduction programme to get them down South as there is no continuous woodland corridor to provide a route to a diet of plentiful grey squirrels. It will only be the folks in the North Herts area between Letchworth and Baldock likely to be unhappy, as their local mutant black squirrels will probably be equally desireable as Marten prey.Byegad wrote:Yes there are Pine Martins in Upper Weardale, and the Squirrels are Red.
