There are lots of manufacturers of sound decoders that have American sounds available. The sound situation is a little different in America to here in that sounds tend to be generic rather than specific to a particular loco which often makes life a bit easier.

Most locos have sounds available for Zimo decoders, and if not they are probably available for ESUV4 instead and these decoders are readily available in the UK.

Zimo sounds are listed here along with which suppliers have the particular sound you want:-

You should be able to get any of the free ones from somewhere like Coastal DCC (along with their own UK sounds):-

I have used the MRC sound only decoders and am very happy with the quality at the price.

For MRC in an SD40 you need a decoder with the EMD 645E sound scheme (not the EMD 645, the EMD 645E)

Does the locomotive have an 8 pin socket or what? Please post a photo.

this one replaces the PCB in the locomotive whereas this one has an 8 pin plug. Both come with a speaker which plugs into the board.

You may need to do your own Googling to find out where the speaker fits etc.

Rob
