Lenz 100 out of stock everywhere

Postby abenn » Tue May 26, 2015 8:15 pm

After several years prevaricating, during which time I ran my DCC-converted locos on my Gaugemaster analogue controllers, I'm at the point now where I must get a DCC controller. But my favourite, Lenz 100, seems to be out of stock everywhere. I can't even find one on eBay other than from USA. Does anyone know why -- have they run down stock ready for a replacement model?

Lenz have a new command station the LZV200 coming out to replace the the LZV100, it has been advertised on their website for some time now. So maybe they are clearing away old stock in preparation for the new release. Their UK distributors A&H models should be able to give you more information. Lenz make some bomb proof equipment but can be long on promises but coming up short on results, an example being their Railcom detectors which have been on their website since at least 2011 and have still to appear.

Thanks Tricky Dicky. I wonder why their web site didn't show up when I Googled "Lenz 100" :?

Anyway, they've got some stock, though the minimalistic starter set with controller LH01, out later this year, looks about right for me. I think I'll give them another look after the summer hols.

The Lenz LZV200 has been advertised for some time as "available early 2012". But it's still not here. I did ask A&H Models but their reply was "Lenz have put the project into long term development – any news and we will post it on our site. I have tried hassling them for a better answer but the answers we get are vague so I await a physical product to sell."

Even the German box-shifters don't have the LZV100 in stock. Perhaps Lenz are busy making the LZV200?

Are you looking for just the LZV100 or the Lenz Set 100?
Note the Lenz Set 100 does not include the TR150 (recommended) transformer

I have managed to find three Lenz Set 100, the websites claim to have stock, but vastly more than what I paid
Sharp Models £325
Rails Of Sheffield £297
EDM Models £296
Glasgow Queen Street Model Railway layout : modern image N gauge using DCC

I'm looking for a complete set, including transformer. It's for an N-gauge layout with not much possibility of any more than four locos running at once, so I reckon the cheaper one (3A?) will do me.

Thanks for finding those vendors. Unfortunately Rails of Sheffield show it as "Availability: Ordered on request", which I guess means they don't have it in stock. I'm going to phone EDM to make sure it's in stock with them.

Very expensive indeed! The German box-shifters sell this set 100 for around €269 which at today's exchange rate works out at about £192. The price at A&H Models (Lenz's UK agent) is a whopping £321. If you're not in any hurry, I'd wait for them to be available again and then buy from Germany.

For example - http://www.modellbahnshop-lippe.com/produkt/Lenz/9-7-0-62863-003003-0-0-0-0-2-0-grp-gb-p-0/produkt.html. And this comes with free postage.

Interesting! How/why do the UK sources get away with such mark-ups? Thanks RFS :)

Bernd Lenz, the founder and owner seems to have lost interest in the DCC side of the Lenz business, being more interested in developing Spur O RTR models.
Very sad considering this was the man who gave his company's DCC protocol to the NMRA and the world for free, in order to establish a common standard for digital model train control.

All Lenz DCC development work appears to have stopped about 3 or 4 years ago and a list of promised new items have failed to materialise.
The LZV200 is something like 3 years late and the LZV100 and SET100 stocks have been run right down for ages.
Nobody seems to know what's happening, but one rumour is that the company is now up for sale, with as yet no takers.

Oh dear, is this another Betamax? I don't want to get caught out again, so maybe I should look at NEC or Gaugemaster instead :(

Lippe have the LZV200 marked as "new for 2015". http://www.modellbahnshop-lippe.com/produkt/Lenz/9-7-0-62745-003003-0-0-0-0-0-0-grp-gb-p-0/ein_produkt.html

How accurate that is, is anyone's guess of course!

And the price rip-off also applies to Lenz decoders. The Standard+ decoder here - http://www.arstecnica.de/shop/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=standard%2B&XTCsid=0h3cfqj2fhkshvd2ukcea35f02 - is €16.99 with free international postage on orders above €50.00. So buy 3 and at today's exchange rate you'll pay about £12.50 per decoder. At Hatton's they're £18 each with postage of £4 on top - so that's £37.50 vs. £58!

Anyone buying European made decoders from UK sellers at the moment, is paying way over the odds.
Personally I think it crazy to buy from UK retailers with the exchange rate being what it is.

Lenz Standard plus decoders can be had for £12.50 to £13.50
Lenz Silver plus (all variations) range from £17 to £19
Lenz Gold plus, about £21

Prices for ESU and Zimo are similarly much lower too.

Just been to the DEMU event at Burton on Trent where Coastal DCC had a stand. They had a Lenz set 100 for sale for £270 if you're interested in getting one now.

Thanks RFS, but this discussion has persuaded me that I don't need to spend that kind of money. I'm not in a rush because I'm still building my layout, and can use my analogue controller to test-run trains over it -- admittedly only one at a time because I'm wiring all tracks to a single common ring main ready for DCC.

So I'm going to wait a couple of months, see if the supply situation has improved in UK, and go to a EU supplier if necessary to get a better price.
