The Lartique Monorail - Listowel, Co Kerry.

Postby NedFlanders » Sun Sep 01, 2019 11:38 pm

One of the few preserved (recreated, if I'm honest) railways near me - The Lartique Monorail ran from Listowel to Ballybunion in Co. Kerry and had what can easily be described as a fairly unique approach to both rolling stock and permanent way. The drawbridge road crossings in particular reminded me of canal crossings in The Netherlands for example!

Here are a couple of photos from a recent visit we made to it and there is a link below to their website, more photos and links to footage of the original line.

What happened here - did an US early steam loco get confused - yes the headlamp really is that big, yes it appears to have a boiler either side! ( the recreation is powered by diesel though)

Front three quarter view of the train

Makers Plate

One of the curved points - imagine recreating this in model form.

A view down the whole line - sadly short. This is taken from between the two carriages, where there is essentially and A frame stepladder built on the end of the first carrage - prototypical if memory serves me right.

Website and more info here.

I must get out there one day and see it, and the old T&D line. I live beyond the end of the former Farranfore to Valentia harbour line but being limited to public transport I rarely leave the Iveragh Penninsula
