Some really nice shots throughout this thread BW. Some really nice locations too - are they all close to you? I would say I was envious, but perhaps I just haven't found the ones near me. Ought to explore a bit more really.

Is it just me that thinks we're struggling a bit when a Class 59 has enough appeal to be running on a tour?

Thanks Dave, it depends what you regard as close. The Gloucester - Chepstow line that runs by the Severn is closest at about 10 miles/20 mins whilst the Marches line between Abergavenny and Hereford is 25 miles/35 mins away. Both have great scenery but the downside is that there isn't much variety, mostly just DMU's. Fortunately I've managed to get some times for freight on the Severn Line so hopefully I'll have some pics of 60's and 66's soon.

if I go a bit further I'm 40 mins from either the Birmingham - Bristol line at Gloucester or the South Wales mainline at Severn Tunnel juncton but whilst these lines have a lot more traffic they are a lot less scenic.

As for the 59's, anything that isn't a DMU is welcome round here. Apparently there will be a 57 hauled holyhead - cardiff service from december!!

@Davek
Thanks for the comments too :D

Nice pics mate, I've got the provisional timings for the new ATW loco hauled service here. Thanks to Adam (Class 60) for them.

Class 60 wrote:Hi Karl,

bit of Gen for you mate, there's going to be loco hauled services starting in December by ATW using hired in 57/3's.
These are the provisional timings so far,

1W01 0610 Llandudno Junction-Cardiff
1W03 1750 Holyhead-Cardiff

1W02 0455 Cardiff-Holyhead
1W04 1905 Cardiff-Holyhead

All services via Crewe/Shrewsbury.

Drivers are being trained up (or retrained in some cases) on 57/3s and will due to start within a few weeks to a month on routelearners.

Cheers for that Karl. I think I'd seen the timings without really looking at them. It looks as though 3 of the 4 serices will be passing through Abergavenny/Hereford in darkness through most of the winter :?

1W01 0610 Llandudno Junction-Cardiff looks like the only one in daytime......and that only just when it starts.

As a lot of you may know, a tanker was derailed on Friday betwee Gloucester and Bristol. Along with engineering work this resulted in Crss Country Voyagers taking the scenic route by the severn. There are also some pics of scheduled freight.

There are more shots at http://brotherwolf.fotopic.net/c1582146.html , I didn't want to post too much here.

Hi all, here are a selection of pics I took on 25th September 2008. The first two pics (tankers) are of the same train on the same day but 60 miles of track apart! The rest are are at a well known spot north of Cheltenham, Croome Perry Wood.

If you want to see more pics taken on the same day head to http://brotherwolf.fotopic.net/c1588666.html

Stunning pics there! :) Love to see some Tugs once in a while, might go out and take some pics of the TEA Trains near Newcastle.

Here is my latest offering, probably the best steam pic I've taken. This was from Saturday when GWR 4-6-0 No. 4936 'Kinlet Hall' and No 5029 'Nunney Castle' headed a special down the Marches Line. The weather was pretty poor but stayed dry just for long enough.

I had hoped October's Photo comp would be Mainline Steam (in South Wales)............Wagons :x where is the justice!!

I've also uploaded some more pics at http://brotherwolf.fotopic.net/c1590945.html but haven't had time to resize them to post here. Some freight and some decent panoramic shots.

Cheers Mate, it's a great place. At this point the Severn is tidal so you get a hint of the sea in the air as you sit and wait. I saw someone describe it as Gloucestershire's sea wall, if we had more traffic I think it would be a lot more popular. The other plus is you can get close to the trains as there is a foot crossing there :D
