And here we have the replica of Stephenson's Rocket pushing and pulling a carriage along a short track in Hyde Park, Sydney during its brief visit here. I can't remember when I took this photo, but I think the Rocket was on display in Australia in either 1980 or '81.

A photograph I took in 1970 of 3801 ready to leave Sydney Terminal double-heading, with 3813, the first steam hauled train from Sydney to Perth.

5920 at rest outside Hornsby station. The story I was given at the time was that it had been overhauled at Eveleigh and was on its way back to Newcastle (it was apparently based at Broadmeadow) when one of its bearings began to overheat just as it reached Hornsby, in northern Sydney (somebody forgot to grease one of them!). It was then left in a siding at Hornsby station until a maintenance crew could come and get it running again. Not sure, but I think I took the photo in 1969.

The NSW railways had 20 of these USRA light Mikados, originally ordered as oil burners, but later most were converted to burn coal. They could have been supplied "off the shelf" so to speak, but the tenders were too long to fit on all but the biggest NSWGR turntables, so delivery was delayed while new tenders were built.....
