actually the first lower class passenger transport on the railways were 'passenger wagons' being wagons with benches put into them. OR sometimes the lower class people had to stand :!: sounds a bit like irish rail in rush hour.

A few years back I took a midweek trip on the Bluebell Line, and a bunch of American enthusiasts piled into the carriage. Whilst we were waiting they were talking about their itinnery. I chipped in and said "it won't have to - only eight English coaches", they all fell about laughing, and started showing me the videos they'd taken. I filled them in on most of the history of the line and the saga of it's on-off-on closure which gave time and impetus to the fight to restore it. Any time one of them said car his mates would chant coach.
