One photo from this morning. The light was poor but rail traffic was heavy (lots of panning practice). This shot does work out and ties as my shortest ever train in Canada - only two coaches. Surely a DMU would have been more efficient?

Heavy fog this morning:

Very frustrating, three freights passed me and through a combination of no visibility and the wrong settings I didn't get much of a shot of any of them.

For once, the weather beat me.

GO Train 917 ran "wrong line" from Oshawa to Whitby yesterday morning. This is the train just to the west of Whitby station as it crosses over to the right track to travel to Toronto.

Now for something completely different. Here is CP Rail train 01H-29, the Canadian Holiday Train. I saw it two years ago in the middle of freezing rain. This year was much better with clear weather, there isn't even any snow on the ground!

This was the train arriving in Bowmanville:

The train was so long that it stopped with the loco on a bridge, so this was the best shot possible:

A good evening, certainly not an ordinary trainspot!

I am in the UK for a quick visit this week! Running on less sleep than a medical student but coping.

Kings Cross yesterday with the new Nationalised Express

This morning I went to see if the RHTTs were still running. I think that this must be the final week of the year.

While the Toronto area is relatively devoid of snow, the cold is here and standing outside for several hours does not appeal. However, I treated myself to an amazing deal in the January sales and have now upgraded my Canon Powershot A530 to a Canon EOS Revel XSi (450D). Here is the first railway shot:

Whitby's snow load is finally starting to catch up with the UK! Still mucking about with camera settings but it seems that I am starting to get the hang of it. I have started shooting in raw and the results are much better. Colours are clearer and I can edit more without damaging the image. Here is the latest result from yesterday:

Another day, another photo. I am really starting to get the hang of the camera.

A trip to Toronto yesterday:

Two preserved diesels at the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre:

I have never seen to GO Transit coaches with promo vinyls on the same train before:

A different kind of engineering works:

On my way home, my train passed the local freight. Oddly, the two diesels were nose to nose. When I got off the train, I literally had to run up onto the bridge with less than a minute to spare!

Ordinarily I'd be jealous of pics of trains in the snow but now we have loads here, I can't be bothered to freeze to death by the lineside!

I have just joined the Toronto Railway Historical Association to help them restore the former John Street Roundhouse in downtown Toronto. Yesterday was my first day volunteering and I spent most of my time cleaning out a caboose. I have started a collection on my website of photo of the work:

Here are a few to get started:

I decided to go trainspotting on the other railway yesterday - the Canadian Pacific.

I tried a new location today. The town of Cobourg is about 90 minutes east of Toronto and is worth the visit as the station is sandwiched between the CN and CP main lines. I met quite a few trainspotters (a very rare occurrence in Canada).
