Armstrong Whitworth's place in the development of diesel traction in
Britain is largely forgotten but not only did they develop a standard
diesel electric shunter in the early 1930s but they also trialled
main line diesel railcars and developed mainline locomotives for use
abroad.
During the day the Armstrong Whitworth will be working a two coach
passenger train comprising two former North Eastern Railway carriages
very reminiscent of the North Sunderland Railway. The North
Sunderland line used a classmate for many years on passenger, mixed
and goods trains becoming probably the first railway in Britain to
operate regular diesel hauled passenger trains.
