'Locking Down' located not far north of Brighton in what is known
as the South Downs.

My thoughts too.. Locking Downs? Very common to name large grazing properties Downs in Aus. But what is a 'down,' when downs are mostly hill, and might equally be 'ups?' I visited Wikipedia.Dad-1 wrote: To give it a name, keep simple and reflecting why, my suggestion.

In the 'hill' context, the word 'down' derives from Celtic (Gaelic or Welsh) dun "hill, hill fort".

Locking Downs does sound particularly good, and I have family in the next village over which is also called Locking! The route from the West Midlands to Bala and the South side of Snowdonia, involves leaving the A5, taking a short cut through a village called Knockin and making a right fork just after the village's Post Office. Now it's been down graded to just a village shop and the directions now read fork right just after the K............................
