Shrewford, N gauge, BR Sectorisation 1986-88

Postby 1977joey » Sun Apr 05, 2020 12:22 am

HI Everyone.

I thought I'd start a thread here of my in progress layout 'Shrewford'. It's a loose representation rather than a replica of operations at Shrewsbury in the mid to late 1980's.

The baseboard is 8 feet by 2 feet 8 inches.
20180406_200335.jpg

The station features 7 platforms, though only 5 are in use with bay platforms 1 is a siding, 2 being disused with the trackwork lifted, only a stub of track will exist into platform 2 which is one of the 2 loco stabling points. Platform 3 can be used for north bound trains aswell as being used for much of the parcels services. The big island Platform features Platform 4 the main up & down Platform, bay Platforms 5 & 6 & also platform 7 for mainly southbound services though this will be operated as Bi directional as operations require...

Trains featured here passenger wise are the Provincial Express Marches line services from South wales/South West to Crewe, Manchester & Liverpool, Normally loco hauled, though Stopping services are operated by DMU's or laterly 'Sprinters'. Birmingham/Wolverhampton to Shrewford stopping or semi fast services. The line to Chester via Wrexham & the local service to Crewe operated by DMU's & Class 150 Sprinters, then also the cambrian lines to Aberystwyth & Pwllheli which are exclusively Class 150 Sprinter operated (as was in the late 80's)
InterCity services are around every 2 hours to & from London Euston, one of these, 'The Cambrian Coast Express' continues to & from Aberystwyth featuring a class 37. On summer saturdays there are 3 extra Loco hauled services down the Cambrian including 'The Snowdonian' to Pwllheli.

With modellers licence I will also run an 'InterCity 125' service between Liverpool & Plymouth which ran from the mid to late 80's but via Birmingham, & have also pinched a Network SouthEast Paddington to Wolverhampton to extend to Shrewford ( giving me an excuse to run a Class 50 )

This is how it all looked back in April 2018 when I'd just finished laying all the track
20180406_193206.jpg

Then with the station constructed a few weeks later. The frontage was made from card with pencils chopped up to create the 'Turrets' on the clock tower.
20181027_133134.jpg

The street scene a little more populated. The road markings still needing to be done, and the belisha beacons are a little oversized so I'm looking to replace these.

Those platform-level shots are excellent and I had to look at that of the Class 33 several times to convince myself that it wasn't real.

I like the backscenes and river in particular as well - it all blends together very nicely.

The platform views are great, some nice detail in the fixtures and fittings. The leading bubblecar with it front mounted exhausts, is a reminder of the one I took each morning for one stop down into Stratford. I bet yours doesn't have the sag in the middle, it obviously developed quite early in its life as the bottom of the doors had been trimmed to fit the slope of the floor! A look along the side at the door hinges showed just how much sag there was.

Many thanks Bufferstop,

I didn't realise the first Generation Bubbles sagged, I know the 153's definitely do! I've got these bubbles as they stand in for a much wanted 3 car suburban unit which were more common in the area I'm modelling, such as the Class 116 & 117's....I have everything crossed that Bachmann will shrink they're new Class 117's to N gauge at some point, but we'll see....

Great low-level photos at normal head height - it makes for very realistic pictures.
I particularly like the class47 in the distance behind the right-sweeping curves and curved points - very atmospheric! :)
Looking forward to more layout pics

Oh and the class33 from Cardiff to Manchester picture is almost photo-realistic. Very impressive for N gauge. Well done :)

Many thanks Alan, glad you like it :D .

Hi Everyone,

Well more modelling done today, though this time with a locomotive. 37426 is my favourite of the 37'4's as I saw it named at Aberystwyth when I was just 8 years old back in may 1986. It was to mark the introduction of the 'InterCity' Cambrian coast Express, London Euston to/from Aberystwyth from that time & class 150 Sprinters taking over from First generation DMU's on the line. The only Large Logo Class 37 loco I could find to do this was the collectors 37558 Avro Vulcan set. I only required the 37 so have sold on the aircraft to an aviation enthusiast ;)

So today I've renumbered & renamed her into 37426 by the excellent Railtec Transfers. I have also with a tiny bit of thin brass put an impression of the small Vale of Rheidol plaque beneath the name. I have to admit the numbers & names were very stubborn to get off, but with a little patience & persistence, i managed to get all removed. I also backdated the overhead warning flashed with Fox transfers one's. I'm now just waiting for some small Welsh Dragons for the cab sides to complete her.

I've also painted the buffers grey & put in the black grease marks.

Here are some pictures of todays modelling aswell as her in action at Shrewford together with her sister, 37429 'Eisteddfod Genedlaethol'
