All Change -- Well Not Quite!

Postby glencairn » Tue May 15, 2018 7:21 pm

The track on both the lines to 'Glencairn' and 'Leeds Sovereign Street' was old, and in many cases used on our earlier layout/s. Running of trains on both lines was becoming unreliable. Plans were made to 'rip up' and start again. It was also decided to 'do away' with the Goods Shed at Sovereign Street Yard.

A short history of the railway to Sovereign Street is required.

Fact. In 1848 The Leeds, Dewsbury & Manchester Railway had their station near Wellington Street (Leeds Central), later to be part of LNWR
In 1849 The Leeds & Thirsk Railway used the same station. The L & T became part of NER.

Fiction. The Calder Railway (from Earlsheaton Junction) headed towards Leeds arriving at Leeds Call Lane. The line continuing to Sovereign Street Yard. A small station being built there also. A small railway company, Leeds, Scarcroft & Wetherby Railway, has running rights to Sovereign Street.

The L, D & M R was having none of this as business was being 'taken away' as they saw it. Therefore they bought the Calder Railway out.
The line to Leeds Call Lane was downgraded and the main goods were transferred to the L, D & M R station.
Goods trains are still required at Sovereign Street Yard for the businesses there; and a small passenger service still runs.

Four tracks into the station. An increase of one on the previous station. Track fastened down and platforms in place. Trains tested, running into the new station.

The curve at Wyndham Farm was on the tight side. Although not radius 1, it was certainly tighter than radius 2. New track purchased and the curve is now radius 3.To accommodate the new curve, the fencing at Wyndham Farm was 'pushed back' so railway stock would not catch and come off the rails.
