Erikslund: An Ikea Picture Frame Shunting Layout
Erikslund: An Ikea Picture Frame Shunting Layout
Hi all, this is my entry to the 2018 Forum Competition and here is my official start point
Please note: This is a half started build, and the following thread details where I have got to in the build. I plan on posting on 1st May where I am now and where I will be starting the build from for the competition.
Background
My first inspiration for this build came when Dave posted about a micro layout he built viewtopic.php?f=22&t=52149&start=15#p637463
We had an old Ikea picture frame kicking around that had got broken while we were decorating, and with that I had an idea for a micro layout that could be hung on the wall!
The Build

I also had some off cuts of 12.5mm plasterboard that would be roughly the right size and thickness to bring the top of the rail flush with the top of the frame
P1030248 by Anthony, on Flickr
And then using the tried and tested means of weighing things down, the plasterboard was cut to shape and glued to the backboard of the frame

My next post will detail track layout and the building of the embankment.

Re: Erikslund: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
Update 2
Over the previous few months I had won a few auctions on eBay of job lots of a mixture of large, medium and small (set track) points.
I decided to just use the medium points, so I started browsing the forums and searching the internet looking at track plans for small/micro layouts.
After filling up four pages of my notebook with track plans, I settled on this
P1030250 by Anthony, on Flickr
Now time to start on the embankment
P1030251 by Anthony, on Flickr
The embankment now trimmed to size and stuck down
P1030257 by Anthony, on Flickr
That gap in the middle is for a culvert, I used some mini trunking we had lying around the house.
I have since increased the length of the culvert to clear the embankment.
My next post will continue with the landscaping.

Re: Erikslund: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
just a quick update for today...
Update 3
I filled in the edges of the plasterboard with some Polyfilla (other brands are available!) mixed with some tubes of paint we have to make a brown colour.
P1030258 by Anthony, on Flickr
I also smeared some across the board where the stream would be.

Re: Erikslund: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
Another quick update for today...
Update 4
Here is the banks of the stream. This was built up using kitchen paper (the cheap kind!) and watery PVA glue.
When I first smeared the filler across the board, I had wanted more of a sweep , but it ended up too straight.
I made sure that when I built the banks up I added more of a curve.
P1030260 by Anthony, on Flickr
I'm not 100% happy. I couldn't get the height in the banks that I wanted, so I am going to carve up the bed of the stream to make it deeper.
Here is an overview shot showing the track soldered together and placed in position.
P1030261 by Anthony, on Flickr
P.S. Don't be fooled by the Christmas table cover, it's nearly May, and it's still on the table

Re: Erikslund: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
After a couple of weeks of being in a box under the bed, this is what I found
P1030277 by Anthony, on Flickr
P1030278 by Anthony, on Flickr
I cleaned it all off with neat bleach, and then left it to dry in the sun. I've left the lid off the box, and lifted the frame off the bottom of the box with some wood.
It's been nearly two months now, and, other than a very light haze on the bottom, I think it has all gone.
And if you're wondering where the name has come from:

That's it for the pre-competition updates, my next post will show where I am now, and will be the start of my competition entry.

Re: Erikslund: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
I hope you get the mold situation under control. Check the rest of the room as well.

Thanks, I think it's all good now.Mountain wrote:I hope you get the mold situation under control. Check the rest of the room as well.
I had it in a sealed storage box, and I put it away while the paint was still wet, so I'm assuming that is what caused the mould in the first place.
Since I've been leaving the lid off it's not been back. Fingers crossed

Re: Erikslund: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
Dampness from the paint as the box was sealed... Kinda the opposite to the reason for using sealed boxes. Unexpected.

An interesting project - and I see you have good taste in beer too
Re: Erikslund: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
True. But, because the box was sealed, the damp stale air was the perfect environment for the mould to grow.Mountain wrote:Dampness from the paint as the box was sealed... Kinda the opposite to the reason for using sealed boxes. Unexpected.
Thanks, I got my good taste in beer from my dad and granddad, who always believed we were related to Rogers Brewery in Bristol.PinkNosedPenguin wrote:An interesting project - and I see you have good taste in beer too
Once the little one goes to bed I'll have a little more time, and update this thread with what I aim to achieve during the competition.

Here is the official start to my competition entry.

It's much nicer than in the last photo! What's not shown is the track, it is fully wired up and soldered together, but I have yet to glue it to the board.
Here is some materials I picked up at a Chris Dyer toy fair near us in February
P1040008 by Anthony, on Flickr
I think this little lot only cost me £5. There is two different colours of scatter; a bag of ballast; some telegraph poles (might not use); and three different types of fences.
To do:

Re: 2018 Forum Competition: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
Its looking a good foundation to build on. You did well to buy those for £5 as things are getting so expensive these days.
Will look forward to seeing your next pictures.

Re: 2018 Forum Competition: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
Sorry, I saw your post yesterday, but I didn't have time to reply as I was just about to head off to work.
I managed to do some work on my project yesterday, I should get a little more time today, and I'll post up some photo's later on today of my progress.
Anthony
Thanks Mountain, yes it was a bargain, but now I think about it, I got one bag of scatter from one stall for £1-£2; and the rest came from another stall for £5. This second stall was large and had loads of second hand bits and pieces scattered all over, but most of it was in larger scales. The items I got were from one of two/three boxes with N scale stuff in.Mountain wrote:Its looking a good foundation to build on. Re: 2018 Forum Competition: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
For me it is more about getting in the modelling mood. I have lots to do around the place apart from that. I'm securing a fence and dealing with excess bicycle wheels I have. (The wheel rims make lovely fence material). I'm also slowly building a diesel shunter in 0-16.5. Also trying to find time to sort bicycle parts as I'm downsizing a bit. One can accumulate too much too easily!
Its a bit chilly outside today so I should get some modelling done.

Re: 2018 Forum Competition: A Picture Frame Shunting Layout
Doesn't life get in the way of modelling! I started this just before Christmas (or at least I got the idea and gathered up the materials). The photo with the mould was the last time I did anything, and that was back at the start of February.Mountain wrote:For me it is more about getting in the modelling mood.
