Dave's Diorama and Micro Thread

Postby Dave » Mon Oct 02, 2017 7:49 pm

There is a thread currently doing the rounds discussing previous layouts. I have had quite a few since I first found this forum, but with the demise of Fotopic a few years ago, and more recently the Photobucket debacle, the threads are long gone.

In my early days I received a great deal of help and inspiration from fellow members, and borrowed a few ideas along the way. Dad-1 recently commented in another thread about small being beautiful so I thought I would trawl through my archives and post a few snaps of my 'successful' projects:

Whilst trying to build my way around the loft, something that I have long given up on, in 2007 the forum had a competition. The idea was to build something railway related with the footprint the size of a piece of A4 paper.

I came up with a little scrapyard, a theme that has stayed with me ever since:

In 2008, I challenged myself to build a photo backdrop in a weekend out of some oddments that were kicking around the loft:

I also knocked something up for the 'Winter Challenge' in 2008:

2009 saw my first proper working micro layout:

Your winter scene Dave, I had sleepless nights due to that.
I look up to you Dave, to say you are short, I have stolen many ideas from you.

Dave's work has always been an inspiration and to be reminded with
this folio of pictures is just fantastic. It was these that pushed me
towards making dioramas and experimenting.
These are "The Builders" side of railway modelling, no collecting locos,
no watching things go round in a circle, in fact no real movement on
many but they are super little pictures, a real art form.

Thanks for digging these up Dave.

Although stalled if you look at the 2017 'Tour' you'll see a picture taken
on his small circle micro. By imaginative use of camera you'd have no
idea on just how small that circle is. Brilliant !!

Thanks guys, I think it is good to share ideas, and I have certainly picked up plenty from other members on here.

I still have a few more to come... watch this space

2010 also had an icy theme:

I had also built a ten foot goods yard in 2010 that appeared at my Clubs annual exhibition. For the 2011 show (and subsequently a couple of other local shows) I borrowed an idea that I had seen elsewhere and built a split layout with the front higher than the rear:

Dave. Excellent! No other word for it. Excellent!
What did/do you use for the icy frost?
