Derby Friargate LNER
It's been a while since the last update but progress has been made. Most of it is under the base boards with half of the wiring with point motors installed. The thing I really need to do is make a switch board as all the switches are just dangling about at the moment.
I have lost my motivation for the time being to do any more wiring so I switched fire on to more actual modelling.
I found these two great 1930s / 40s white metal vehicles which will make a great addition to the station area. One is complete while I am part way through making the other when my humbrol Sat varnish spray died.
I think that the finished Austin ten makes a really good model. I have made several purchases including a GNR 6 wheel brake which needs a repaint, what's described as an ex ECJS luggage brake coach and a GNR milk bogie brake, which was in brass kit form.
The later it appeared on inspection was not a complete model and had instructions for another model inside which helped ...
I decided to use a donor hornby suburban coach as the under frame is the same. I need to work out a way to fix the GNR fox type bogies to this, most probably from an ian kirk kit, or to leave the gresley ones on.
Thoughts? Lastly I have been touching up the LNER TPO which still needs weathering and the lining painted on the panels... Or does it?
This is probably my favourite coach and looks great behind some LNER green. Thoughts and comments welcome,
Thanks for looking.

Thoughts...more superb modelling work Coops.
Comments...the Austin is a great addition to the layout, is it a Springside kit?

Some very nice new vehicles, I need a few more milk/brake vans, especially ex GN.

Re: Derby Friargate LNER/ BR garage layout
Thank you Paul and Manna
The vehicle kits are simlar to Springside but are by John Day Models. I first saw this product on a model railway called Helensdale which is also LNER themed and thought it was great, not too expensive either.
I ended up trying to adapt the other set of bogies however the wheel sets do not run freely with the axel scrubbing the main body of the bogie frame and that it has no bearings doesn't help so back to the drawing board with that one.
This is the other vehicle which is awaiting a satin spray before continuing. Thanks

Loads of work done since I last looked in Coops, the layout is looking superb
and the teaks, what can I say, they look fantastic. Now back I'm following with interest.

Re: Derby Friargate LNER/ BR garage layout
Thank you Jim for your comments, I hope to make a bit more progress.
I had the day to my self so decided to have a go at installing a signal box interior to what will be 'Derby West' signal box.
The signal box is by knight-wing and for a while I had trouble getting hold of any, as with out totally scratch building, they are the closest model kit I can find to the GNR signal boxes commonly used through out the Derby extension of the GN.
I have managed to pick up two more which will be bashed together to build the bigger 'Derby East' box.
The kit for this is the Ratio interior kit. The last one I used was the Springside metal kit some years ago, however this one being plastic I thought I would give it a go. I am pleased with the results and quite happy with the detail achieved without much extra being added.
I made the fire place with some spare card and a match stick. Originally I was going to place a flickering light behind it for the fire, but it just so happens that I have lost it . However when I come around to it I may retro fit one. The fire also serves to hide the ceiling light wire as it exits at the roof as not to be observed.
It may eventually need a repaint on the exterior as I am still not set on the exact shades for the livery, which is the early LNER brown and cream, a follow on from the GNR livery. I have also got to replace the detailing on the roof end that pinged off but that's a job for the morrow.
Hopefully I will get some more done soon.
Thanks for looking

Nice signal box, that would have taken more than a few hours
manna
Ps. Some of the signalmen would bring a old bit of carpet from home to put in front of the levers.

Oh Lordy,
Apple Green Locos, Teak Coaches and all modelling "in period" - this layout is just a super example of focussed modelling.
Thank you for sharing.

Re: Derby Friargate LNER/ BR garage layout
Thank you very much for your comments Jim, Manna, Pete and Si.
Manna, that is a good idea and I will employ it in the larger signal box and it will make a nice touch thanks.
Another productive day today, although it is true that there are never enough hours in the day as I had so much on my 'to get done' list, however modelling is like stepping foot into a Tardis!
I managed to finish off the 1930s LNER express parcels truck which I think is an excellent model and enjoyed making it.
I also started on building a factory to be used by the railway. Although I am basing my lay out on Derby GN I can not achieve a prototypical copy of everything and so I am beginning to employ modellers licence more and more and this is one such case.
The factory is to be used by the works dept and is in the general area of where the some of workshops were but is fictional in its design.
It will be for light engineering.
Eventually I am going to fit an interior on the ground floor from some Wills kits with some workshop machinery. I have decked out the interior walls with brick plasticard which is 'lime washed'. I might also include a stair well on the inside too.
Where it will be placed is right on the edge of the board so viewing will be ideal.
I have still got the roof to install and some exterior brick work including the entrance block.
It is going to be next to the road bridge and so I had an idea of a sort of advertisement / branding on the facing aspect to the road, 'Great Northern Rly' or something similar painted in the bricks. I am not sure about the best way of doing this. I am toying with the idea of buying some printable waterside transfer paper?
Any how ..I have stepped out the Tardis and it's gone 23:00.
I hope to do more again.
Thank you for looking.

G'Day Gents,
Nice factory, I find the research, can take up a awful lot of time and buildings are even harder, you can never get the view that you want especially on some thing that was knocked down 50 or 60 years ago.
On the subject of old signs, there is or was a firm that made faded signs as a transfer, it was called 'Ghost signs', you might have to google it.
