I have been using Phoenix SR Midde Chrome Green and SR Buildings Cream on some buildings, but I'm not sure if that is right. Also your lamp posts, you say you used the Peco ones - did you mean Ratio? I looked for a long time at SR Concrete Lamp Posts, and the Ratio one's were the only accurate ones I could find. I have now powered these and they really look good - still to be fitted to the platform. Your layout is inspiring me to get a move on with mine. Many thanks - Barry

Barry,

Thanks for your comments, now some answers to your questions. When I was getting my station together in advance of construction Initally I purchased a Peco Manyways country station kit LK-12, Peco Modelscene 5004 Lamps and Peco LK-25 platform seats. These all feature a dark green colour as do the station name totems I purchased later from Tracksidesigns. The paint I found that matched this green is Railmatch acrylic paint 2314 ‘Southern Stock Green’. Which is BS381C 226 Middle Brunswick Green which searching on Google tells me is the same as Middle Chrome Green. I have used this colour along with Railmatch 2312 cream to good effect. So that’s my ramble regarding Shawhurst’s station colour.

You are correct regarding the concrete lamp posts, these are Ratio lamps 454.

Hope this is of help and look forward to seeing your layout’s progress

Tony

Tony

Many thanks for the information. My station is named "Wykeham" and is in a totally fictitious town somewhere in the south (Hampshire/Dorset/Wiltshire - take your pick!). I will start a thread soon hopefully with pictures. It is a "U" shaped end-to-end based on Cyril Freezers "Portable U" in his Sixty Plans for Small Locations book. It is built around three sides of a 10x7 room - DCC, code 75 track and Cobalt iP Digital point motors. Slow progress but I'm getting there.

Thanks for your comment.

Some progress with the maintenance and paint depot. More work is currently in progress in this area to include a yard crane and a Ratio 507 grounded van kit, which should be getting this coming week.

Finally getting around to getting more of the carriage and wagon stock I have been accumulating since 2002 out of their boxes and into storage drawers so I can at long last start to rotate using them. I have four of these foam drawer inserts, each with eight carriage length slots. And a view showing a busy Shawhurst station and a few small detail additions - a chain fitted to the water crane, fire buckets and crates on the maintenance/paint storage shed and just visible a crane jib.

Looking good Fratton.
Looking very good indeed.
High class storage you've got there for your rolling stock. Looks well organised.

Thanks for the encouraging comment Pete. The storage trays I obtained at this years Lutterworth Railway Society's model railway exhibition from JB's Model World, one of the traders in attendance

Slow progress at the moment due to work required on the garden and around the house, however some yard lights with ladders have been added the back and front of the loco depot and a ramp and barrow crossing added to the maintenance/paint storage shed. The grounded van in the foreground is a Hornby Dublo SD van body used in place of the Ratio kit I initially planned to use. There is still much detail to add to this area.

Yes. I've had quite a few of my storage inserts/boxes from John (JBs Model World), mainly from the Milton Keynes show. Where my wife works they get their headed note paper in plastic boxes A4 size so I just have to buy the foam inserts from John when I see him at shows. Pete.

Step back in time. Over the years I’ve collected several pre-nationalisation goods wagons, mainly SR plus one GWR wagon and four private owner wagons. I noticed a couple of weeks ago a new Hornby SR class 700 on sale at good clearance price. So I thought I’ll get that to go with the wagons I have and here is photo of No 325 setting off with a short pick-up goods. Now I’m thinking shall I make my layout switchable between the current late 50’s/early 60’s era and step back to the 1930’s time period. Also some progress with the maintenance/painters depot.

How do you get that "well trodden" affect on the ground next to the track? Is it ballast well flooded with PVA and then painted grey?

Regarding the well trodden affect – basically ‘Yes’

Hello,
I've only just spotted this thread. Wonderful modelling ! Now I'm a huge fan of the Shawhurst - SR/WR OO gauge layout.
Have you ever thought about building a loop ? Anyway, I look forward to further developments.

Thanks for your comments. Regarding a loop. its a nice idea however where the baseboard stops at the end of the fiddle yard there is an opening inwards door, I have overlapped the door frame to squeeze every millimetre of length possible. For the future a possibility of a house move next year will hopefully allow me to expand Shawhurst into a U shaped layout, where the current fiddle yard will become running lines. When I get around to it I will post a how this will look.

Working on adding SR Concrete style fence and access gates to the front of the layout. A gate is next to be added to cross the wide planking. I’m just waiting for the paint to dry.
